Been reading my Collins DSLR Handbook, and the writer suggests using UV filters on all his lenses, mainly to protect them from scratches, dust and so on.
Does anyone use them? Been looking on the internet, they aren't that cheap, but they are compared to new lenses!

I did for the first lens I bought, just a clear glass item to protect the main lens.
Since then I've bought lenses with a much wider front element, and the cost of a clear filter is rediculous so haven't bothered yet.
That said, £25 for a bit of glass to protect a lens worth £800 isn't so bad....

I had one on mine before it all got nicked. It was a piece of mind as I would rather scratch a filter than a lense really!

Got one for my 80-200 and my 18-70. Depends what your shooting really but you run the risk of a chip at anytime.
I've shot MotoX with stones flying everywhere and my mate got a nasty gash on his UV Filter. So that £30 odd quid just saved his £1200 lens. I think they are worth it just for the piece of mind.

I have one but i use 3 lenses, so if i know i will be using just the one lens all day I may pop it on, otherwise its just in the bag.
Idealy though as APK said, it is a cheap way to protect you expensive stuff

that photograph is worth the £20 expendature for a lens filter alone.
i have bought a 58mm UV today, merely to protect the true lens.

I have them on my 70 - 300 mm just because they came with it. Not likely to get hit as such but just to protect it. I'd definetly buy them for any other lenses I buy for peace of mind.
