Ok i recently got a new job which means i now have to travel 69 miles a day to get there and back (34.5 each way). Although this is not a considerable amount i still feel the strain each week on fuel. I am currently spending about 35-40 a week on petrol in my 1 litre corsa!
Im thinking of selling the corsa for around 650-700 and getting myself an astra 1.7 diesel.. or something simular.. does anyone have any recommendations? I have 2k to spend and desperatly need a new car anyway.
Also if im currently spending about 35-40.. lets say 35 with (todays petrol prices) in a car that apparently does around 45mpg according to vauxhall, what would i be looking at in a 1.7 astra diesel that again according to vauxhall does 58mpg?
Bearing in mind the fact that diesel is slightly more expensive than petrol, is the change a logical one?

MY old mk4 astra 1.7dti Izuzu was amazing, couldnt knock it, I was doing 450miles a week and that was 3/4 of a tank, and that was when diesel prices were up at around 127.9 round here.
Wasnt the fastest around town, and was sluggish gettin out of junctions quick but on the motorway it would sit at 70/80/90mph all day long no bother, mine was on coilovers on 17s and stil a very comfy car to use daily

Kirstys Dad's does 55mpg round town.
I took it for a run to Selsea and managed 63MPG sitting at 70.

But in all honesty, my car does an average of 45mpg, which would end up costing more than your Corsa to run.

i'd say VAG 1.9 TDI... i was a passanger in few TDI passats and they all sit at 100 all day long... i was suprised tbh.. and accoriding trip computer MPG was pretty high..
as for corsa 1.0, 45 MPG is a myth tbh.. i managed 43 on motorway sitting at 60...
now get 35-37.

You are missing the point though, a VAG TDI is going to cost £££ when it goes wrong, and for 2k IT IS going to go wrong.
A Pug 1.5D is fairly simple, if it goes wrong its simple to fix.

306 D-Turbo
Both mine were good on fuel and shifted along quite well.
However, the £100 Renault 19 1.9TD i have now is almost as fast as my corsa, and its superb on diesel

I do a 65 mile round trip everyday to work, I put about £35 a week in my 106 (gti).
If you get a bigger newer car then factor in it will cost more to fill up (my S3 holds 60 ltrs and costs around £55-£60 to fill) plus servicing etc.
I would just keep the corsa, cheap motoring at its best !

I have had the following in the last 2.5 years
Pug 106 1.5 D (n reg escapade) £325
VW Vento 1.9 TDI (£300)
Both have their plus's. The Vento is comfier but obviously heavier and higher tax bracket.
I love the 106 1.5 Diesels, once you get used to them they aren't that uncomfy to drive! I took mine on a few 400 mile round trips and once they get going they're great! Oh and they pretty much run on fresh air they're that good on fuel!

Not sure on the 106 but I ran my vento on used veg oil for a bit. Was only filtered to 100 microns oopose to 10 so it clogged the fuel filter up.
