Been having problems with my laptop charging, it will work one sec, then it wont, then it will, wont etc etc. Had the problem before, so ordered another power cable.

Got the new power cable today, and its still faulty. Whats the socket inside connected to?

Its a gateway laptop btw.

Thankoo

The socket inside is probably connected to the motherboard.

You might as well ask "what's on the other end of a piece of string"

You can buy sockets on ebay for a couple of quid.

http://shop.ebay.co.uk/items/?_nkw=gateway+laptop+power+jack&_sacat=0&_fromfsb=&_trksid=m270.l1313&_odkw=laptop+power+jack&_osacat=0

Might need to be a bit nifty with a soldering iron so I'd leave it to someone who knows what they're doing to remove the old and replace etc.. If that still doesn't work and it is a motherboard fault then your only a few £ down.

A lot more than a socket and harder to source cheaply.

easier to buy a new1 if thats the case. if i wiggle it, it works, so im guessing its broken away from the board

Might just need soldering back onto the contacts. Worth a try first if nothing left to solder then get a new socket. If that fails and it's a board issue you might get lucky on ebay with a 2nd hand board or get a new laptop. Depends on your current spec and how much you want to spend on it.

Might be some hidden under stickers or rubber feet, pads. I hate opening them up

I find at work that every manufacturer is different. Some even have a seperate power board which makes life easier. In most cases though, they are soldering direct to the board.

There are sometimes screws hidden under the keyboard that need to be removed before the back of the device can be removed

Well, seems the problem of power is least of my worries. went to turn it on after having it working all day, it just kept blue screening.

Did the gateway start up repair, kept comin up system data corrupt. After looking through all the other options on it, found one to restore to factory image. Which is says wipes it and starts again.

It did it all for me, installed all drivers itself etc, and now is working fine.

Problem is, ive lost all my pics/work etc etc :'(

Noooo I wouldn't have done a restore to image. It should have warned you were about to wipe?. Could have got a cheap usb 2.5" caddy and put the HD in. Moved all your data to another PC drive. Then wiped the laptop hd and restore. Works for the most .
