I have got some LED's switch and a battery thingy...

I have wired up the leds but the battery is getting red hot!!

Do i need a resistor?

Go to maplin and buy them for a few quid.

15 miles = excuse for a drive.

Still, 30 miles = £3 of diesel in my car, so it might be cheaper for you to have them delivered

i bought 1 LED, 1 Resistor and one PP3 Battery clip from Maplins back in my college days for my project. came to about £2.50.

What leds did you get and what battery?

You normally do need a resistor with leds but the led should blow before the battery gets hot.

i remember in school there are colour'd bands on the resistor dependent on the curcuit?

The bands denote resistance yes.

There are loads of sites with calculators for what you need but if you don't know the details it would just be guessing, which can normally be educated because certain led colours are normally certain values.
