i have the 1000d and love it never used the others though.
you are seriously best going and trying the see which is best for you. as people who have nikon will 99% of the time suggest nikon and same goes for canon users

I know i say it alot, but take alook at the nikon d50, you can only get it 2nd hand now with the d40/d60 being the new ones out, but you get auto focus etc etc which helps
Also, i have been told by tonnes of photographers, the d40 and d60 are not classed as an upgrade to the d50, so you would have to go upto a d80

Out of them the 1000d would be the best choice.
But like Jacko says, have a look at the A200 as well. Great value for money, only down side is the current lack of sony lenses, however you can use older Minolta lenses on the A200.
Best thing to do would be to pop into your local Jessops and handle the camera's in person, and see which one feels right to you

I have a 450D. If the 1000D is anything to go by, it's fantastic. Really easy to use, sturdy, battery life is good etc etc

the d40/60 are behind the equivilant priced Canons imo, just the lack of an AF motor seriously peeved me
they work basically the same though, you can have a mess at the next meet
Matt L has the 1000d, bully him to come to the next week and have a go

so I've heard back off the camera people and they say the d60 is the best choice
Theyll do it for 293.25 too and will chuck in a 2gb card and reader for £5 and also a wide angle lens for an extra £46.50
Sounds very tempting!
