Someone in my office just sent me these pics of the Burj Dubai, thought it would be of interest even to those not in the construction industry!
View of some of the surround buildings
Bit bigger than the last project I worked on

Didnt think it was that big when it was going up and I used to drive past it... now I just think it's enormous.
Fuck knows what time the guy at the top sets off for graft in the lift for a 9 o clock start... probably about 3am.
There was plans for Nakheel, Dubai's master developer to develop a mile high tower, but since the credit crunch, it's been shelved for the foreseeable.
Construction, jobs, and the whole city of Dubai itself is suffering massively at the moment.
Even staff at the biggest construction companies in the world in Dubai are off on unpaid leave as there's simply nothing to do.

Was reading that the whole of the middle-east has lost an estimated £2.5 trillion in the 'credit crunch'

Additionally, Dubai has also seen record numbers of cars dumped at the airport over the last couple of months.
People with debts/loans get jailed if they can't pay off debts (An individual cannot be made bankrupt) therefore people are simply driving to the airport, and leaving.

Combined with the drop in oil they're getting hit massively.

Was at 155 floors when i was there. Planned 165, but didn't reveal final plans of height (for obvious reasons).
Needless to say, its big, VERY big. Makes Canary Wharf look like a toothpick
Its the surrounding though, thats 1 building. Its going to be truley awesome. Sand to lush grass, trees, lakes, skyscrapers etc...
Dubai is wicked. The Palsm and world are mental. The amount of land being created from nothing is staggering.

They were building a whole new monorail too to connect the whole cost.
Heres the rest of the complex, Burj to the left.
