Hopefully, im looking at a K reg (93) car, but the MOT is up soon, and it has a straight through system, would save me buying a cat for the MOT if i get the car.

Find out if the car came with a cat as standard. If it did, you will need one for the mot regardless of the year (i'm sure)
If it never had one, then you'll be fine.

Indeed, according to this listing on ebay:
Clicky
The very early XSI's came without a cat, so Im thinking im going to need one for my XSI to be.
Ah well, will be a bartering point for getting the price down.

Just found this paragraph on this page. :
Testing does seem to have worked to an extent. In the year after it was introduced in 1994, there was a 14% reduction in emissions.
Can't quite fiqure out what year they're talking about by the way its worded.
Its either 1993, or 1994

Okay, so if that Ebay ad as is selling a standard decat centre pipe which was fitted to 1991-1992 cars, they must have introduced the cat in 1993, which suggests the introduced the emissions test in 1993 too.

Contact VOSA in the morning, and ask them.
You'll find the details you need on this site.

Just found this on pistonheads.
“The lack of a catalytic converter is not an automatic fail in itself, but a vehicle may struggle to meet the required emission limits without one. Prior to 31 July 1992, a spark ignition engine is required to meet limits of CO<=3.5% and HC<=1200ppm. Between 1 August 1992 and 31July 1995, the limits will depend on whether or not the vehicle is listed in the current edition of the In Service Exhaust Emission Standards for Road Vehicles book ( currently the Ninth Edition) which all MOT stations are required to hold."
You can read the rest here in the first post.
