Out of warrenty by 6 months... chances of a free replacement?
Anyone got any tips on what to say (what to admit to?)
Going to give sony a ring when they open up in a bit, just wanting to know what to expect really.

I'd take it back tot he store & argue that although the warranty is for 12 months it should've lasted longer than 18 months, otherwise it's not of satisfactory quality.

no what happens is that that song and xbox use lead free solder to be enviro freindly (but its crap) when they get hot the solder melts and the chip seperates from the motherboard and will not start sometimes is death other times its just allowing it time to cool. Its quite a big problem in the PS3 - indicator is a red flashing light.
Sonmg giving me a doorstop exchange, but forgot to ask, what is the warrenty on exchanged items is it 90 days? and do i need to remove the hdd or will the new one come with one, i forgot to ask and fuck ringing them again took half an hour the first time?

Try the towel trick
Wrap it in a towel and swing it above your head for 5 minutes before smashing it into the nearest solid wall. Has worked for other AFAIK

The vinegar water trick may also work on the PS3, does a sound job on the 360s?

you do realise that solder becomes liquidus at 183 degrees that meaning the solder joint would have to reach that temperature before it could move or dislodge itself we still use tinned lead solder

Well it was my understanding that it got that hot inside the xbox, that the clamp that holds down the heatsink expanded - causing the heatsink to literally jump off the graphical processor.
I don't know what this solder stuff is about.

Well not sure about xbox's but thats what the woman at sony told me was the usual cause for ps3's and xbox use the same solder.
