Borrowed a Metz flash gun but its putting a big dark area along the bottom of my pics, any ideas? Ive tried with a few different lens' on my 400D but they all come out the same!

whats the zoom set to on it,
I was getting it a few weeks back, I had the flash on manual and the zoom was still set at 70mm and I was shooting at 17mm

i dont think there is a zoom setting on it. Just aperture and iso.

Not got your big lens on it have you ???
Got a pic of the actualy flash?
Does it need a diffuser or something?

Define big lens? Ive tried it with the 50 and the 17-55, exactly the same thing happens on both. I think its just fucked, its proper old ropey thing, rattles and everything

You're not using the shutter too fast or does it happen regardless of settings?

have you got the lens hood on, the flash will bounce of the top of it causing a shadow.

Check your flash sync speed and don't exceed it.
It sounds though like the lens is too wide for the flash. If you drop below about 28mm in 35mm format you're gonna get a wide photo without flash coverage. Failing that, its stuck with back tilt on it.

Or as stated - if you have a long lens on the light from the flash will be catching the top of the lens and casting a shadow.
