I'm in the process of writing a covering letter to go along with my cv.

The only details i know is the guy i'm writing to is called John (his email address is John@...)

To open the letter, do i just write, "Dear John" or is there a more formal way of starting. "Dear" sounds quite, eerrmm, well, i dunno, just not right.

Its okay, i've tracked the guy down.

Its Mr John McEvoy.

I think its better to address a letter this way. It shows i've actually tried to find out his name, instead of putting Dear Sir, or to whom it may concern.
