Middlesbrough fans have been told to sit down and be quiet during matches at their team's Riverside Stadium by a club official.

Safety officer Sue Watson had letters handed out to fans during Saturday's 0-0 home draw with Wigan Athletic asking them keep the noise down as they had received complaints from some supporters.

Watson said in the letter: "I am receiving more and more complaints from our own fans about both the persistent standing and the constant banging and noise coming from the back of this stand.

"Please stop. Make as much noise as you like when we score, but this constant noise is driving some fans mad."

What do you expect when you go to a Football match, everyone sitting in silence

Make no wonder atmosphere in grounds across the UK is getting worse when shit like this is going on. If I were a Boro fan i'd be taken a megaphone into the next match and making as much noise as I could to piss these people off even more. If you want silence go to the fucking Tennis or Snooker. Wankers

Whilst i agree it is stupid, and i like a good atmosphere, the constant standing up boils my piss ( i don't mean when we attack and people stand up to see more, or standing and jumping about when we score) I just mean standing for all 90 mins

1 goal in the last 9 league games (or whatever it is) suggests there's little to worry about when it comes to making noise after a goal

I stood up for the full 90 mins at mansfield despite it being all seating as did all of our singing fans.

What a fucking joke though at Middlesborough. How can you expect the team to get pumped up for a match if all they can hear in the background is some mild clapping! The handing out of these letter would have really pissed me off and like Danny said i would have being determained to make as much noise as possible, much like when they announce on the tannoy for people to stop standing or swearing, it just makes it worse

Not at all, ignore that chant and I still think standing up gives a much much much better atmosphere.

Of course you can, but you can hardly get all passionate sat there in your seat.

Standing at matches beats sitting for atmosphere by a huge amount.

It definitely doesnt feel right singing sitting down at all. Not when your really passionately signing, arms in the air etc.

No-one sits at any of our away games (Newcastle). Boro put announcements over the tannoys to remind away fans that it's an all seater stadium, and apparently reduce away capacity for us, the mackems and others like (i think) Man U.

Our capacity for most away grounds has been cut this season due to 'persistant standing'.

TBF, they're probably not all that bothered whether you stand or sit, but have been 'reminded' by a body above that their fans are standing too much

Either way, its rediculous.

What a fool you are. Sitting down is rubbish and i dont do it. Standing for 90 mins and singing is the only and proper way to support your team.

If you want to sit down stay at home!
