May sound like a silly question, but the more I speak to geeks the more I find out about superb programs that I have never heard of before. Even if you think it's widely known, just list it and a brief description. Feel free to list anything that doesn't come with Windows as standard

I haven't got much exciting which is why I made this thread really.

Anyway...

VLC Media Player: The best media player I've come across. Sleek and smooth and does everything I want without all the other nonsense.

Mozilla Firefox: The browser that suits me the most. Been using it for years.

Google Talk: Lightweight little messenger application that doesn't hog resources and is very quick. Does exactly what you want it to do without all the bloating extras that other messengers give.

DVD Shrink 3.2: Best DVD ripper I've come across. Use it all the time to rip DVD's to lossless .VOB files to store on my HTPC/PS3.

mkv2vob: What it says on the tin really. Superb for converting HD MKV's into .VOB's which can be read by the PS3.

Photomatrix Pro 3.0: HDR tool. Superb piece of kit.

Photoshop CS4: Everyone has heard of it.

Dreamweaver CS4: Mainly just use it for the FTP organization and the PHP syntax colouring.

uTorrent: Best torrent downloader for me.

Ares: Replaced LimeWire a few months ago.

Fast Stone Image Viewer: I use this for viewing RAW files without having to load them into Photoshop. Fast, sleek and easy to use.

PS3 Media Server: The best media server for the PS3. Very easy to use with tons of features. It'll change your PS3 forever if you're into streaming. It convinced me to build a HTPC just for streaming.

FLAC: Superb little codec that rips CD's into lossless audio. Each .FLAC is normally about 30mb but it's CD quality. If you've spent a fortune on your speakers and so on, this codec is for you.

mIRC: The best Windows IRC client.

So, just list what you use and what you use it for and it may turn into an alright thread.

VLC - best media player going

IrfanView - small app to view and edit images, also comes with a tool to do batch changes to aload of files

Wireshark - use it alot at work to look at packet captures

Putty - to access my seedbox/shells via SSH

Firefox - beats using IE

Outlook - nothing special here

x-netstat - very graphical way to show the netstat command, very cool way of linking processes to ports, protocol and how much bandwidth they are using

That X-NetStat is pretty decent actually. It's staying installed. Cheers.

Can you both write a description of what they do? I've got no idea what 'Diskeeper', 'Paint.NET', 'Daemon Tools', 'Audacity', 'Aultramon' and so on do...

Solidworks 2008 - buggy and crappy piece of CAD software, but it's what the university uses so I have to use it.
3DS Max - Not very good at it yet, so can't comment on if it's any good. But I want to use it for 3D renderings of my Solidworks drawings.
Realflow 4 - Use it to animate fluid. Not very good at it yet, so can't comment again
Adobe Photoshop CS3 - Use it to do manual renderings of 3D models and colour in hand drawn sketches. Also use it as my primary scanning software.
Adobe Illustrator CS3 - Use it to turn hand drawn sketches into vectors, and to vectorise 3D mesh raster outputs from Solidworks so I can do more cartoon-like manual renderings of 3D drawings. Also do poster design.
Adobe Indesign CS3 - Using it to produce my portfolio and some leaflets and things I'm designing.
Adobe Premier Pro CS3 - Use it to hash together video outputs from Solidworks into movies for presentations.
Adobe Flash CS3 - Don't really do any Flash anymore cos it's crap. Javascript all the way!
Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 - Use it because I don't really like Notepad++.
Firefox - Just like it more than IE
uTorrent - Just like it really...
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 - Learning how to make .net websites so I can step away from PHP.
