Looking at these 3, used, all around £1000 - £1200

Aprilia RS125
Honda CBR125
Yamaha TZR125

Anyone had any, personal experiences, what to look out for when I go to look at some, what should be in the service history and at how many miles?

Thanks (also, ive already decided im pretty much going to do the bike route instead of a second car, so not really looking for posts saying 'get a car instead, homotorcyclist etc )

None in my local area for sale (60 miles on autotrader ), otherwise I would consider them

I had the same list well plus the cagiva.

Cagiva won such a pretty little bike.

Need to know what to look for though, google hasnt been very helpful thus far, just baised reviews from people saying they love it or hate it, not actual reasons why

The RS will be the quickest, best looking but need to be careful about condition. Loads of ragged ones about. Try and find a full power one if your license allows.
Good quality two stroke oil is the key to long life and piston rings get checked every few thousand miles.

The CBRs will be the newest but it aint a two stroke and is slow.

The TZR's are really old now and unless you can find a cherished one with relatively low mileage and number of owners i'd avoid.

I had a RS125 and RS250 for a number of years

Allan, why does 4 stroke make the CBR slow? Think I read somewhere the 4 strokes are more reliable / generally stronger engines than 2's?

The CBR being four stroke is alot more reliable than the others but will only get you about 80mph

The Aprilia RS is the quickest by far being 100+ seen 120 out of one, but very unreliable, must use the top of the market oil, cant really stay in high revs other wise it will blow up.

And if you want a TZR why not go for its 4 stroke younger brother the YZF-R125 very quick for a four stroke seen some hit 100+ beautiful with a tail tidy kit, and best looking, my mate just bought one if you can afford the yammy this would be my choice.

the 4 stroke CBR has 13bhp and thats it, they aren't restricted, 4 strokes just make less power than 2 strokes.

My aprilia MX 50 had 15bhp then I put a 70 kit on lol never knew cbrs were that low

2 stroke is the way forward for small engines.

The YZF-R125 is a new generation and I doubt within budget.

As said the CBR125 is low powered but by all account a great little commuter machine. You'd want an NSR125 for two stroke power.

They're all pretty much the same and will come down to taste, budget and how tidy an example you can find.

Small bikes although light, still get dropped quite a lot as in general most owners are either learners or newly passed. Most experienced riders have moved on or might have one tucked away for nostalgia, small weekend runs/winter hacks or commuting.

TBH, having never even sat on a motorbike, im thinking 80mph would probably be fine

I just want something thats reliable, less to run than a car (all of these then) and something that I can do the 100 mile roundtrip to my parents and what not when I feel like it that I wont have to have an arse made of steel to make the journey

yeah your arse will be quite sore after a long trip in those bikes, I'm not even sure a CBR could even do 80mph maybe down a hill probably.

To be honest, my RS is quite comfortable.



I've done hundreds of miles on it in a day and it's been fine, the only thing I find is occasionally I have to stand up on the foot pegs to stretch my legs...

Are you limited to a 125 ?

There a total waste of money in my view.
£1200 and you can get a 600cc gsxr etc for that sort of money, 97-98 plate.

RS are well know to be unreliable, I just found on my old on that the airfilter was getting wet all time when it was raining and that made it bog.
Loud and it's annoying the amount of times you need to change gear on the bloody things.

The 4t engine should have more torque and be a smoother ride, but it dosent have the power band that comes with 2stroke engines.
CBR Being a honda it will be very reliable but I think its only something like 15bhp some people say with a different cdi that they are seeing 95-100mph from the cbr, probably bs tho.

Right ok well i did a bit more research this morning and basically have decided to go for the RS, if anything every year it needs a new piston, seals and gaskets, apparently thats £100 all in from a dealer so local independent will be cheaper than that, which is still much cheaper than a car service

Sunz,yes mate im limited to a 125cc, you have to take DAS or full motorcycle test to go for anything over 125cc IIRC? I am 21 but want to learn slowly and surely

Ive picked the 3 above btw as I want something that looks decent and has some get up and go when it needs to have, I wont be ragging it to fuck everywhere, thats why I dont want to consider a scooter or the like

I had an rs125. Its a great bike. I did 20k on mine and only did a piston and barrel change once. Even then it was only cos I felt it should need one, compression was still fine. Just run them on decent oil and it will be fine. I found mine comfy too. Also rs should be restircted for leaners, but most people run them full power.
