I've only had mine a year, it always sounds like it's going to take off (graphics chip reaching temperatures of 90 deg.), and now my wireless is dead - the switch on the front panel thing is always orange now instead of blue.
Has anyone had these problems before and fixed them (I am contemplating buying a MacBook and selling the HP but I don't have £800 spare to spend on one just yet!).

HP G6031EA.
I still can't get my wireless to work, the Broadcom device has disappeared from Device Manager, so I think it might be dead

Yours sounds just like my friends. It was bought around 9/10 months ago. It has been back to John Lewis 4 times to have stuff fixed like the wireless switch not working etc.
On the 4th return he complained and said it was not good enough and was given a brand new laptop which was the same current generation model (but much better as a year newer tech i.e. bluray etc)
Since he has not had any problems. I suspect there is a few dodgy models in the HP range as the others appear to be solid.
Want reliability look at the old Thinkpads - might not be the best to look at but are real work horses and take some severe abuse.

Good luck with HP support, one I had to deal with ended up going back to pc world because they were that bad.

Well I managed to get the wireless going again, I uninstalled HP Wireless Assistant and reinstalled it, and reinstalled the Broadcom drivers, as well as this I physically removed the WLAN card from inside the laptop and reseated it.
I suspect I won't hear the end of this though as my WLAN is notorious for fucking up on a regular basis.
Still, I have a spare WLAN USB adapter that I can use when (not if but when LOL) the Broadcom adapter finally dies.
