I have my xbox 360 connected to my router/modem via ethernet, and my laptop connect wirelesly to said router, can i play files off my laptop throught this connection on the xbox?

But they're both connected to the network ok? i.e. have internet access? If yes, then you just need to go into windows media player..
Tools > Options > Library tab > Configure sharing > Tick share my media.
Done.

Have you done what I've said? The 360 streams the stuff from your pc.

yep i cant find the laptop through the xbox or the xbox through the laptop

on mine i just go to. music player > then my laptop is listed where it says select source (or what ever i cant remember) ipod, internal HDD, and at the bottom garys laptop. its there regardless of my laptop being on or off. obvo it only streams if lappy's on.
