My mate was building a VERY high specd Civic VTi. It was going to be a high compression B20B3 engined EG Civic. High comp pistons, knife edge crank, stage 3 race cams, bike carbs, block guard, shorter ratio LSD gearbox, fidanza flywheel, coilovers stripped interior and bucket seats, and huge brakes, but decided to break it in the hope of going for an Evo. Shame really as it was going to be daft!

Anyway, he sourced a standard B16A2 and fitted that. He gave it a bit of treatment with the laptop that saw Vtec raised to 6200rpm and rev limit tes to 8800rpm. It went rather well for a standard B16. He was going to run it with just the B16 and sell it. We were out in it on friday night, and during a bit of lunacy, the belt snapped at 8500rpm. After we stopped crying form laughter, we started thinking about what to expect once we get the head off.

He has a spare head anyway......

I reckon 16 bent/snapped valves and possibly holed pistons. Maybe even duffed valve guides.

What do you reckon?

I assume the engine cut out right after the belt snapped.

Did he try starting it again?

The engine just went 'thud' and the needle hit 0rpm. We coasted to a layby and got out and looked. The belt was snapped right through. Not worth trying to start it

im gonna go with about 10 bent valves, 8 goosed guides, deep in dents in the head mopre than likely cracked, and 3 holey/ cracked pistons, and a couple of slightly bent rods, and a couple of scored bores,

apart from that itll be a minter!!!!!

My belt slipped a half turn of the bottom pulley on Hogmany when I was trying to bump start it due to a flat battery. I never knew it was flat at the time so tried bumping it twice, ended up with quite a bit of damage.

I could actually hear the 'clickety click' as the valves hit the pistons , possibly one of the most sickening noises I've ever heard.
When I got the head off I found 16 horrifically bent valves (some bent in an S-shape) and about 8 cracked guides. Think that was just due to the fact that the engine was turning for a couple of seconds with the wheels though I think.

Without knowing the engine, I'd go with 16 badly bent valves and possibly 16 cracked guides due to the rate of knots it was going at. The pistons in mine were fine, but that was at slow speeds - not sure how bad they might be on the civic. I'd go with pistons with little round indents in them but the bores being fine.

belts tend to snap at low revs due to more drag compared to high rpm. if go at high rpm it could be tensioner slackened off, woodruff key sheared etc.

last cambelt failure i saw was a 20xe with all guides flush with face of head and all 16guides broke.

im guessing on the vtec valves, guides, maybe seat damage and piston damaged.....the usual

Bent valves
very dented pistons.

Prehapes even valves lodge IN to the top of the pistons

If really bad, it could have bent the rods.

But the top half of the engine will be made up of more fragments of dislodge metal than I would want to think about

D5NNA blew up the day Donna got her, on idle. Bent only 8 valves. Got it under Vauxhall warrantee though and saved £1700 in repair bills....

That was on the 1.6 16v unit. At what, 900rpm??? Nasty at 8000+rpm.

£1700 for 8 bent valves? Didn't think Vaux's labour charges were that bad.

Done more damage.
Labour costs to remove the head, replace all the parts.

Thats what the receipt shes still got says. Was done under warrantee though so paid nothing.

Imagine it, you've just picked up your fairly new (at the time) Corsa GSi. You get it home, just about to turn it off and pop ding bang!!!!!

Can't imagine anything more gutting tbh.

Pics needed of this Civic when it gets cracked open if it's not already been said!
