If you dont brake you can lose speed by chucking the car into a corner but you will lose traction and slide and lose speed on the exit of a corner, brake beofre you turn in, try and keep the traction down and accelerate out of the bend.

go to agree, its all about carrying your speed. Remember you have to drive defensively though if someone catches you as if they get enough room they will get in front by braking late, then you are stuck.
Been on a few tracks and they are usually very similiar, usually only one maybe 2 corners you actually need to brake (depending on how fast you are around the bits prior.)

don't use your brake, just let off and accelerate out of the corners

also, take the racing line when cornering...

and be accelerator happy

I'm 17st and came 3rd on a competion day at Scotkart.

Simple: no fear, brake late but not hard, boot the gas as soon as you turn.

Nope, actually more weight will allow you to go quicker round corners.
When I went last time with a bunch of work friends, I weighed almost 17st and still got quickest lap out of all of them, despite one of them owning his own kart.

As Corsa SRI said, brake late but not hard, do not break when going round corners, you'll spin.
Anyone saying 'dont break' clearly hasnt driven before or isnt driving fast enough to warrant using the break.

Push yourself one lap at a time, each time aim to go quicker than your previous lap.

Lean forward on long straights. Sounds daft but it works.

Thing is... is it indoor or outdoor karting? what are the karts like?

It differs greatly depending on the karts and the type of circuit etc.

For example, indoor track on shit karts - you don't want to lose any speed at all as the karts are slow and will bog down, so it can be beneficial to slide the kart to maintain engine revs and drive out of the corner.

On a outdoor track with a fast kart, it's better to be smooth and not scrub off vital speed by sliding.

Same with the driver weight... on a tight track having low weight helps as out of the slow corners the lighter driver WILL pull away quicker. I've karted at a weight of 13 and a half stone when younger and karted at a weight of 9 stone 8 more last year and the difference to acceleration is definately noticable, at 9 stone 8 you could pull out of corners and just pass people on the straight that took the same line.

However, in fast corners when I was lighter the car would slide / skip sideways on the track. So extra weight could help there.

Will see what I do in a few weeks now I'm around 11 stone? Good compromise?

The basics are, brake as late as possible (don't brake if not needed), stay flat out as much as possible, don't scrub off speed, etc.

I find braking coming up to bends and steering at the same time works. Throws all the wiegh over the front wheels so you grip.

I could be, and probably am, completely wrong....

nope, you are correct, it's a well known technique for better turn in on rwd cars.

Good point, hmm... probably still transfers some weight to the front though...

or maybe it has something to do with the brakes only being on the rear axel?

its all about smoothness and the less slide the faster you will go. if you want to have a laugh, go like a nutter and throw it into the corners fat out, but if you want to be fast, brake late, but do not lock up, and steer smoothley

Momentum will have a part to play in it too!
