You should be able to pickup a Nikon D40 with the 18-55 kit lens for buttons. I highly rate the D40 and the kit lens, they're a great combo.
Don't be put off by people putting the D40 down because it has no internal motor, there are plenty of exellent AF-S/HSM lenses out there that more than make up for this.

That's just the 1st link I found, it'll be available cheaper if you look about.
Second hand i'd be looking for a 400D or possibly a 450D, much better than the equivlanet nikons.

Nikon D50, built in motor, so will autofocus etc etc. And is considered to be better than the d40 and d60.
