the story goes

The owner of this shop in Mexico was tired of thugs breaking in so he came up with the idea to trim the dog to look like a lion and then spread the word that it is one.
He hasn't had a problem since!!

There's actually a breed called lion dog (leonberger actually, but same thing apparently). They are huge.
There used to be one that drank ale in one of the local pubs here.
