I've got to produce an A1 sized poster for a piece of work I'm doing. I want to use a full sized image for the background, something like this:

So there is a fair bit of space on it for some other graphics and info. I've always been told 300ppi for a high quality print, and I can't stand seeing pixelated images on peoples posters.

I'm guessing I can get away with a lower res image than 300ppi, but what would the lowest be? The poster is for our degree show so it will be mounted on a board and as it's large format I'm guessing the viewing distance would be about 1m.

I'm used to working in dpi, not ppi (same thing?)

250dpi and you'd hardly tell the difference at that distance, 200 you could probably get away with.
