Hi
I currently own a 93 Nova Gsi and I'm thinking its time to change to a newer car and was wondering how does the corsa gsi compare? I've heard that the handlings not as good as standard but can be solved easily with uprated shocks and springs? What about performance? Any help appreciated.
Cheers

Should be pretty much the same speed mate just a bit more refined To be honest the corsa'a handling as standard is a bit off.Nothing a full kit can't sort though.

Pfffffff what a load of rubbish!
The Nova GSI is like 150 -200 KG lighter than a Fat bástard Corsa.
If you want a real car then get a Nova GTE

You'll find the Corsa GSi has a few more refinements, although there may only be a year or two between that and your Nova.
The performance of the Nova GSi will be a lot more invigorating than the Corsa GSi, but that's to be expected.
The Corsa 1.6 Sport is only marginally slower (if at all) than the Corsa GSi and if you pick up a 1999-2000 model, you'll have a fairly new, low mileage car.

Given a choice of the two, I would choose a Nova GTE over the Nova GSi.

I like the look of the standard corsa gsi, there quite cheap now and the 16v engine can be easily tuned compared to my nova. Anyone know how much a corsa gsi weighs?

Yes CorsaNath, this was originally a question about the Corsa GSi over the Nova GSi, but I was replying to your reply regarding "downgrading" from a Nova GSi to a Nova GTE.
I hadn't realised that only you were allowed to comment on the matter - accept my humble apology.
Given that most Nova's will now have high mileage, it's not surprising that they will be unreliable, but this is no different to Corsa's with similar mileage - it's no reflection on the cars themselves.

Corsa GSi has 109/106bhp (2 different engines). 0-60 is 8.5 and 9 seconds. Top speed is 121mph and 119mph (all in order) going by factory stats.
Corsa handling isn't great no. but, yeah, can be sorted with a good suspension setup, lower struts, strut brace etc. But we are getting into track day handling.
Modification wise, both are good lumps to mod. The 1600 16v lumps can be tuned to over 200bhp with the aid of TB. Advise against turbo conversions unless your prepared to put a lot of money into it.
TB are deffo the best way to go, or if thats too much to for out (bout £2k fitted n setup) then a different inlett manifold can be got (Mantzel, Velos) which can still give good gains when accomanied with different mods.
There a great engine, nice looks just let down by poor factory performance figures and handling.
But spend £1k-£3k on the engine and u've got urself a 2.0litre performance motor with just less torque.

I started off in 1.4sri which was totally std, ive got the new Csri and it winks the dobbermans out the old stuff. The powerblock has a new uplifted can of beans with a lower wider banana slider. Nought to sixty is down by a silky glove and top speed now quacks at 120+.
Go with the new Csri if you want some serious flap smiler.

the 1.6 gsi engine was developed by lotus and had to be tuned back from 150bhp to 109bhp for production, so that kinda gives u an idea of its potential

Above comment is right. The early engine was detunned with a different inlett manifold and wilder cams. This gave a worse fuel consumption and the power delievery wasn't as smooth. Shame.
Also, the 1.6 had the same power as the legenday 2.0litre redtop, so they couldn't sell it as 150bhp

I heard that an engineer from what was once the Benetton F1 race team hand built each of the bolts securing the cam cover to the 1.6 16v engine.

But then they were too light, so some lead was added to the core of each bolt to make the car heavier and slow it down.
