I've just got myself an HD flat screen so wanna download some HD movies.
anything i download comes down as a .mkv file.
how can i get these to play on the tv, i usually download avi's and play them through the xbox.

it will surely loose quality if I convert it though will it not? i.e. if i convert it to avi it will just be dvd quality

An .MKV is just a container file with an .AVI inside.
Keep the same codec & resolution, and it'll be fine.

I downloaded gotsent which converts the mkvs to playstation3 viewable files, didn't seem to lose any quality. they are still the same size as the mkv files

Use XenonMKV to convert the MKV to MP4, this will just decode the audio and put it into 2.1 rather than 5.1 - as the XBOX can only read 2.1 in MP4.
Doesn't loose any video quality as it just re-encodes the audio.
