I messed up my AS's so didn't apply for uni this year and planning to this winter coming. I want to do Motorsport engineering but I have a problem, I only have an AS in physics.
Although in that AS we did all the mechincal bits and also Ive done an A level in maths with mechanics, do you think I will still be able to get on any of the motorsport engineering courses?

Best thing to do is ring round the university's - where were you thinking of going?
I've just finished a Mechanical Engineering degree, but I know Rob E is currently doing a Motorsport Engineering degree at Swansea Metropolitan, and as far as I'm aware I don't think Rob did any AS or A-Levels - although he was a fully qualified car mechanic before he started the course.
Best advice is to ring the university's you are interested in and explain the situation - they will simply give you a yes or no with your qualifications.

We can't tell you if those Unis cover those topics. Motorsport engineering is more of a specialised course, only a few uni's will do it.
Not having a pop, but have you actually bothered to do any research yourself of your just posting asking everyone else to find out for you.
I wanted to know these exact questions, so done a search and found everything I needed to know online. Locations, qualifications, term and length of courses etc...
Try it....... It might answer your questiojns

I know those uni's do motorsport engineering unless UCAS lies. I just posted up to see if anyone had been in a similar situation.

no thats what people in the same course said about it, they thought it would be building and working on race spec cars.
personally i thought it was crap, i know someone who stayed on after i dropped out, he cannot even do a service on a car.

Find out which uni's do the course and then order a prospectus. Infact most uni's have them online - ie: Huddersfield do motorsport >LINK<.

Make sure you research your choice - look at the league tables for motorsport courses and also what practical stuff they have to offer and how well the Formula Student team does.

Realistically you're going to be better off doing something like Automotive Engineering or Design. If you're set on motor sport, make sure the uni you choose does Formula Student, and see if they do it well. Look at Coventry, and possibly Aston.

I did a HND in Motorsport/Automotive Engineering, interesting course but the piece of paper is effectively worthless. Why is the piece of paper worthless? because most companies demand experience as well as the qualification. My only regret is not working harder at uni and trying to find a permanent placement for after I graduated,
I got offered some work during my 6 week placement but it was not the area I wanted to get involved in. Im more interested in being a technician carrying out diagnostic work on the engine management and fuel management side of things, the only way I can see myself getting a job now is by going to college and doing mechanicing and then switching to technician role, or by an apprentiship.
I would say I have a good knowledge of the subject matter, but I have no real experience in the actual working environment, so would require training etc. which isnt what people are looking for.
As for the course itself there is a lot of A level maths and science, most of the work is theory very little practical unless you get involved in extra curricular activites. I really only enjoyed the engine technology side of things as thats what Im interested in, but its different for everyone.

my brother did it at swansea, he didn't go college after school so didn't have as's/a levels but he had nvq's because of the jobs he did after school
the first whole year they never went near a car, was all written work, mainly maths which he hated
4 months into second year he dropped out, and by then they still hadn't gone near a car
as said above, its not what it seems

Most of the people that do motorsport engineering are idiots that think they'll be taught how to work on cars and have no practical experience whatsoever. They don't understand the level of engineering thats involved - motorsport is basically the development platform for the automotive industry where technologies stem from the aerospace sector which in turn get its technologies from the military sector. The poor quality and mentality of students that do motorsport give the course a bad name, but for the truly committed ones its the ideal course.

I think RCS's course is the best motorsport course I've seen... I'm just judging that on the fact he gets to race prep / race cars 
Bradfinchams was good too... and he now works as a race engineer etc

Thats just it... too many kids are like 'don't know what to do with my life... everyone goes to uni, so I guess I will, but what should I do?'
... oh hang on I like cars / motorsport on tv... I'll do a motorsport degree it'll be a laugh.
Time would be better spent not going to uni at all and doing a apprenticeship or something like that.
I FORSEE a lot of ex 'Students' unable to get work in the near future
Too many people these days do courses for the sake of it / with no real job prospects.
Like Media Studies.

Although it kinda sounds a little geeky, I do like the theory based stuff anyway, Im alright at maths (hopefully getting a B).
