Hi Everyone,
Now I know there has been alot of bills per month threads etc as I have viewed most of them however just wondered on average what people set aside for food each month?
Me and my girlfriend are looking to move out before Christmas (ideally) But wondering what is a good estimate to account for food each month?
We are not big portion eaters and enjoy the likes of pasta and rice dishes.
I have a feeling Asda is probably the best priced Supermarket for deals etc.??
So how much do you set aside? And where do you shop?
Really appreciate any help
J

We just buy stuff when it comes on offer and buy it in bulk, things like Ketchup and frozen stuff is great to buy in bulk when better than half price offers are on. We dont really drink so its about £30 a week for me and the missus

Cheers Danny I think being sensible is the key and things like sauces etc that have a long shelf life atre good to buy like you say
Wow that is a good weekly shop, Do you tend to stick to one supermarket?

We go through about £30 a week too tbh, but I'm really bad with food shopping, I work 6-2's so when i've finished i just go and buy random food from Sainsburys, so possibly more than £30.
If we were budgeting and had to do it properly then for me and the missus could probably get it to £20 a week

Cheers Cavey
These figures seem quite good I am impressed and definately shows what can be done if sensible.
Me and my missus do not drink either so thats a plus point.
I guess with pastas and similar dishes the food can be brought in bulk anyway and stored

allot will depend if you buy say hp beans or asda beans
a while back me and the other half tryed changing things from brand to cheap (dont do the lowest cheap but do the next 1 up) you will be surprised
asda jaffa cakes (orange box) are better than the brand ones and years ago i said i would never eat that cheap shit
there is a fair bit on are shopping that has changed and things that have not
HP beans we kept lol
same as washing tabs ect
there is me and the other half and 2 toddlers 2 and 4 and we do about £160 a month but we do pop out at weekend ends and may buy a bit from local shops
hope that helps

Very helpful.
I too have been a bit pesimitic of the cheaper brands but some people swear by them. I guess you never know until you try.
I am with you on some things should not be scrapped financially on like washin powders etc.....but I am sure a majority of things are so similar it is hardly noticeable
Thanks alot baz considering you have the toddlers that is a great monthly figure.

it will take you a good few shops before you fall into a routine of what you need to buy.
think me and the wife spent about £70 every couple of weeks, plus nipping to the co op for bread milk fruit etc in between.
now we have a 6 month old daughter its gone up to about £110-120 every other week when i do the shop, and about £80 when the wife does it, stingy bitch

We tend to do a big food shop every 3 months which costs us around £250 which constists of fresh meat etc which we freeze...
Then we just buy things like fresh bread/veg of a weekend and spend about £20 on that

I really dont understand how people spend as little as £30 a week on food.
When I was living on my own, I was spending at least £50 on food from the supermarket, probably another £30 on takeaways and then probably £40 on beer.

Beer isn't food so I haven't counted that, at the moment I spend way too much on
"entertainment" When i drink i play pool and gamble, so 2 nights a week or so are generally 60-80 quid realistically.
May have to cut down a lot soon anyway if mortgage plans come to fruition, which is probably a good thing

Yeah how do you manage £30 a week for 2 people?
We buy sensibly at home, 4 of us, Dad buys Pepsi on BOGOF when it's on etc and Mum still manages to spend £80-£110 on food and washing powder etc @ Sainsburys every week.

Morrisons on Tuesday night
3 x 1l 'M' Orange juice £2
M Korma Sauce 98p
M Milk 86p (they dont have the 75p 2L there so we spent £1.50 in Tesco buying 2 of those)
M diet lemonade x2 80p
Pack of peppers £1
Carrots 87p
Button mushrooms 73p
Stir fry sauce x3 £1.50
M Jam 99p
Onions 45p
Wine Gums 66p (half price)
Clemintines 62p
Mini Doughnuts on reduction 45p
Veg Stir Fry £1
M Frosted Flakes x2 £3.24
M Honey Nut Flakes £1.75
M Trim Flakes £1.99
2x Rice Crispy Bars £3
Warburtons Bread 1.29
Tweezers £2 (one off purchase, normally substitute this money for some reduced meat that goes in the freezer)
M Value Eggs £1.45
Comes to just under £30?
Just buy expensive things like chicken and beef etc on reduction, if you get lucky they will be reducing it to 75/80% when you walk in the shop. Some weeks it will be more than this when I have to buy dishwasher tabs but again I buy those when they are on offer, our Tesco was having a stock clearance thing to make some space in the warehouse so I got 4 packs of Finish 3in1s for £4 less 10% staff discount, so £3.60, made it something silly like 4p per tab
Shop sensibly and it doesnt have to cost the earth
edit - you will also notice there are no ready meals on there - while they say they serve 2, what it means is it will serve 2 babies, the portions are shite, which means you need to get a ready meal per person, and they can range from £1.50 for the cheap ones up to what, £3/£4? for a Tesco Finest something like that?!

BBQ's rape the old food budget.
Kirsty and I did one with her brother and his gf the other night, I spent about £12 on food and some bulmers - pasta and salad.

Me and the mrs usually spend £50-60 a week in Tesco. That's all food including stuff for taking to work and toiletries. Alcohol is probably another £30 a month but only done once a month or so

On average I spend £40-£50 a week on myself. I am terrible for buying nice rump steaks etc.
If I really wanted to I could probably half it but that would mean cutting out the nice meat etc...
