Morning All
Moved in the new property a couple of weeks ago, have been spending alot of time getting everything fitted etc, finally got around to fitted the lounge with the AV equipment: http://www.avforums.com/forums/members-home-cinema-gallery/1040574-finally-its-wall.html
Has anyone else had acoustic problems in a new build? Im looking to put canvas paintings on the bare wall to see if that helps.

the flooring wont help matters.
Canvas prints will help, as would a rug of some sort. You already have curtains so no doubt thats stopped a lot of echo that would of been in there.

Getting it fitted by somebody was probably at least 10k, probably more.

More like sub £5k
There is less than £3500 of kit in there, would have been half a day or a day to install.

Onkyo arn't my cup of tea either to be honest, i just dont like the way they work, prefer Denon but thats just me.
We are an Onkyo dealer but very rarely quote/install them.
I do like the Kef speakers though, we have some set-up in the demo room and they sound quality.

Are your walls made of paper like my newbuild? I dont dare hang much more than a canvas print or a wall clock on them for fear of the whole thing being ripped down, let along a telly

I think the total bill for the equipment was around 4k but that included £350 on the AV cabinet and £750 on cabling.
It was only half a days job to get the system on the wall i actually paid a company to do it for me there bill was £300 and a few cups of tea which wasnt to bad.
The Kefs are stunning i must say the Onkyo does compliment them very well, and yes this is a brand new build so paper walls all the way
Found a nice rug now just need some canvas painting

I have a denon and boy does it like movies - not great on replicating music - i.e using it as a stereo but for movies its immense

£750 on cabling? what the fuck did you use?
Oh and before any "audiophiles" come preaching about good quality cable etc.. I used to work for Prestige Audio so I know cable 'can' cost a lot, but makes little noticable difference in moderate installs such as this.

The £750 was a rough estimate i think it could be more in the region of £600 to £700. All cables where IXOS except the speaker cables which where cambridge audio,
1) IXOS HDMI 458's ( 2 * 3 metre £100.00 each & 2 * 1 metre £80.00 each)
2) IXOS Optical 1 metre(Sky HD to Onkyo £30.00)
3) IXOSMono Subwoofer 3 metre £30.00
4) IXOS Power Cables changed * 2 £50.00
5) IXOS Banana plus for the connections on the Onkyo only £20.00
6) Cambridge Audio speaker cable (30 metre & £4 per metre) £120.00
7) Cat 6 RJ45 custom length network cables * 2 £30.00

Why do you have 4 HDMI leads? I would have thought you'd only need 3? - 1 from each source to your AV amp (Sky & Blu-ray) and then 1 from the AV amp to the TV?
Have you compaired the IXOS cables to regular HDMI leads? personally I wouldn't say there's much difference, and I certainly wouldn't want to spend £360 on them.

so your saying a £5 HDMI cable would be the same quality as an £80 HDMI cable?

Hmm, I still dont see the point in spending so much on cables TBH.
We used to do £100k+ installs involving media servers, full HD distribution, home automation, muli-room audio, lighting control etc.. etc.. and never used £100 HDMI cables.
Ideally, the best practise it to allow your AV amp to control the source switching, so you should only need 1 feed from the amp to the TV.
When it comes to allowing for future expansion (or faulty cables), we used to run a couple of coax to to each screen to allow for antenna connection & IR signalling, and also built-in freesat for the Panasonics... then a few runs of cat5 to take HD over a set of baluns.... and the main feed from the AV amp would come down 5 core AV component cable (made to length on-site). Another advantage of custom made cables is that if for some reason a connector is damaged, it's much easier to repair/replace than a fiddly HDMI connector.
This was plenty of cable and we rarely used it all unless one of the sparks on a job cut through any of the cables.
I'm not having a go, but just saying for any future installs you do, you could save yourself a packet.. I used to have the same way of thinking about paying lots for decent interconnects. Until I got involved in the big installs, and realised that interconnect cables have a huge mark up and are heavily pushed by most high street "hi-fi specialists"
Looks nice though

I'd say so - you'd be hard pushed to see £300 difference

Sorry dude
I'm suprised the installation company didn't advise you... surely they should be trying to keep you as a valued customer by giving un-biast advice?
Have you considered buying a remote that can be programmed to control everything? The Logitech Harmony One is a good budget controller to get you started, or if you're feeling a bit flash you can pick up a decent Philips Pronto for about £150-£250 2nd hand on eBay. Fit a light dimmer with IR and you can control that too for a nice automated "cinema" effect to starting your movies
