My friend received some travelers cheques the other day, for quite a bit of money. But upon checking them they appear to be counterfeit!

Why would someone send someone else fake travelers cheques? Is it some sort of scam to get her bank details? They were just delivered by post in a normal envelope with hand written address, nothing else in the envelope and she doesnt recognise the handwriting.

So its used instead of your money, so if you loose it you dont loose your money.

Has somebody maybe been trying to use them as a con to pay for something and sent them to the wrong address?

Shouldn't have to go near your bank account at all with even real ones.

Haven't Traveller's Cheques been made obsolete now?

I doubt it as it had her full name and address on the envelope.

Can you not pay them into your bank if someone gives you some then? They were not signed by anyone so its as if they were a gift or something. Had a London postmark.

I'm not sure where you can change them, not too clued up on them.

Even if you did pay them into your bank your details shouldn't be passed back at any point, especially if they were counterfeit.

Looks like a scam, got a few results from googling but i dont actually know how it works. Most of them seem to involve cashing the cheques and then sending some of the money back to some cockend Nigerian twat but she hasnt had any return address or anything!
