i received a letter a few days ago that my bank were giving me an overdraft of 100 quid. now i didnt ask for that, but whatever i rarely get down under 100 quid in the bank so may come in handy.

now i checked my bank before, i have 192 balance, available says 192. surely it should say 292?

so i just found the letter from my bank. its for a different account? i only have 1 bank account. ive never had 2. account number and sort code are both different to the ones on my bank card and statements.

wtf? is someone trying to scam me or what?

Did the letter ask you to do anything?

If I were you Id ring any number of the letter and see what they say!

no, letter didnt ask me to do anything. just stated that from 23rd id have 100 quid over draft.

ive never set up another bank account. ive got the same account as i had when i was 16. its a visa electron one not even a switch or anything. its as basic as you can get.

im thinking im going to have to phone the number up and find out whats going on. im a little bit worried actually.

If you know it isnt for the account you have then phone up and speak to them, obviously wouldn't be the first time someones details have been cloned, did the letter have a specific branch address?

Get on the phone to them asap Nic. If you only have one account, then the worry is someone has stolen your identity to create another!

Call your bank, not the number on the letter.

Ask if there is another account open in your name and if there is tell them to close it immediately as somone has obviously decided to use your details to open an account and land you in the shit.

It happened to my cousin once before and she ended up being told she owed the bank £700 for her overdraught even though she hadnt opened the account in the first place.

right so phoned the known number for my back that i get on my statements. its same number as on the letter. letter was adressed to my full name which i never use.

so the automated account thing didnt recognise the info on the letter. spoke to someone and the account doesnt and has never existed. cant make sense out of the letter at all. they checked through my account for any weird transactions and there wasnt anything.

so basically, ive no idea what this letter is for, as it appears to be nothing. im still a bit worried about it. im not a rich man, so i dont exactly have a lot of money for it to go missing.

If it's not on the systems, they'll not really be arsed looking into it. Your best bet is to take it into a branch, and have it faxed across to the main office to have it looked into.

But in answer to your first question, no, your balance shouldn't have +£100 because you have an overdraft

Balance should, but the amount available should be +100.

It does, I have an overdraft I dont use but it shows as available balance on my online banking.

The only thing that will effect that is a debtcard charge that is yet to come out so wont show off my balance but wont allow me to spend that amount of money.

They are a waste of time. The only reason i have the account is because i dont really want an overdraft as id probably be at the bottom of it all the time then when you do want an overdraft with them they try and fleece you of having an account where u pay £10 a month just for having it!
