hi people, just wondering really if any of you have taken a gap year before, the girlfriend is finishing college next year and we are thinking of going then,(around oct 2010) we were thinking of doing the whole year,
is it cheaper to buy a flight to somewhere, work in a bar etc build money up a tad then move on to another location?
the other option is a round the world ticket but then its to a set time and day etc etc,
we are wanting to go to places like fiji, new york, australia, new zealand, china, etc etc
any info and help will be much appreciated espaecially prices and places to avoid! lol
cheers, brad

If you've got the money then got for it, better to do now than wish you had later on when you cant!?

Whole idea of having a gap year or traveling is to do exactly that, and not plan on working just to pay for stuff. Why would go to some of the most beautiful places in the world to go work behind a bar or be a waiter? It's beyond me. And besides chances of getting work? If you didnt get a job then how are you going to pay for flights if you are relying on getting a job and using the money to pay for it.

I would only do this if you have plenty of cash.

Yeah if your going to work id sack it off and just go a couple weeks holiday.

Working in another country for peanuts in the raging heat does not appeal

You need loads more than 3k. You cannot bank on getting a job to pay for the hotels. If you get a job, you will get paid fuck all.

If you can get to an STA branch near you by 8am tomorrow morning, they are selling tickets to Australia for £10. Though you'd probably need to get there a bit earlier than 8am! They're for working trips so you can you're going to need to sort the visa out, erm today...

£3k can get you quite a long way. You could get yourself a One World ticket for something like £1k which will do the route you want to take and then stay in hostels for absolutely fuck all.

The problem with working is you need a work visa for every country you want to work in, which costs a fair whack. Then you also need a bank account to be able to work in most places. What you could do is choose to work in one country for a bit then when you're bored make your way home via other places.

Companies offer gap years where you pay them a small amount to start with and then work for them, so they organise the jobs, not really clued up on it but could be worth a shot
