I have a Compaq SR1909uk and the 80gb internal HDD has 450mb left on it.
I was looking at externals but would prefer a 2nd internal drive as space is a premium and cost is an issue.
Could someone please advise what I need and how easy it is to install etc.
Ta

you would need to open the case and have a look at what you have, i'd reccommend getting a sata2 drive over a IDE drive as its a faster drive, but it depends if your motherboard has a spare sata2 connector, you would only be looking at £30- £40 for a 250GB drive which would be sufficient? IDE would probably be the easiest, just set the jumper to slave and put it on same ribbon as existing, need any more info u2u me

I have a spare 80GB IDE hard drive, ill post to you for £10 via PayPal if you want it.
It's in excellent working condition.
Ill set it to slave before i post it and all you need to do is attach it to the same cable your current hard drive is on. It's a 2minute job, ill also send you the mounting screws.

Thanks for the offer but my photography would fill 80gb within months. I'm looking for at least 500gb to keep me going for a while.

It's SATA connection... so you'll need to buy a 500gb SATA Hard drive, I use ebuyer, £50 or so, turn computer off, plug it in, go.

The board will most likely have 2 IDE ports aswell.
1 of them is prob taken up by the DVD-RW drive so the other will be free.

The motherboard specs on there show it as having SATA ports.
Buy something like this:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168374
Another SATA cable, and get hold of some mounting screws, and use a guide like this:

According to that spec, yes it does have 2 IDE, which is apparently now called PATA ? So John is right as well

Technically, the term IDE covers both PATA (Parallel ATA) and SATA (Serial ATA).

Looking at this spec there is only space for one internal HDD.
Hope not I bought another one to go in.

You can mount an extra internal HDD in the spare external 3.5" bay.
edit: and get an adapter to put one in the external 5.25" bay, if you wish.

Top right on the motherboard in the first photo, there's 4 identical, different-coloured sockets. They're SATA.

Thats IDE at the moment but the connectors on the top left of the motherboard in the first shot are SATA, the black power connectors are for sata also.

So the black connectors are SATA power connectors?
So I just need to buy a SATA data cable which connects to the motherboard?

Much simpler to just buy an external USB drive.. You can get 320gb for less than £50 these days.

True, I have a 500gb external already.
Just don't have space for another one so an internal will do nicely, plus it saves on another plug.
