Just out of interest, does anyone know how to go about getting a copy of your criminal record so you can find out exactly what employers can see about your past? Do you have to pay? Are there companies that do it, or is it best just to go through the freedom of information thing and ask the government or whoever?

Depends how your future employer decides to do it, as their are a number of companies who he can use to search into the records adn each will report in a different way.

Not sure about England but up here we have Disclosure which is ran by the Scottish parliament. There are either 2 or 3 levels of checks depending on the work you do. I need to have the extensive one as I live in a home that has foster children and had to have medical checks, full police check and they even went to my school and former employers to get character references.

I'm fairly sure you can request a copy from the police for a smallish fee

It is only valid to that point. Think about it, you could get done for killing 15 people a week later and it wouldn't be on your CRB check as it would be out of date.

Same here, Not daft enough to get caught. THere was a programme on a bit back though where a guy was getting afuck off list back when he got CRB checked but it had fucked up and it wasn't his convictions, but he was struggling to sort it out and suffering because of it, funny but harsh at the same time!

True, most places that I've worked at that need them have insisted on running their own check at the time.
