is this a good upgrade from the D40?
Does it have the motorised body or does it still use the lenses with motors in like d40?
anybody got any good feedback etc, any images peopl have with the stock lense (18 - 105mm)

Yeah, it is motorised, you'd be pissed off if it wasn't at the price!
Not sure on whether it's a good upgrade, has HD video, and live view iirc?
Have a nose on talkphotography, will be some good reviews on there

I have a D40 and would only upgrade to a D300 as it's weatherproof and has faster focusing than the D90.
Whats wrong with the D40, lack of motor? If not then I would look into upgrading your lenses as the difference is huge compared to kit glass.

What about the D5000, I'll admit I don't know anything about it, but it seems to be the midpoint between the 60 and 90, £600 instead of £800 for the D90

nvermind, after a quick read the D5000 doesn't have an auto focus motor.
12.3 MP CMOS sensor (D60: 10.2 MP CCD)
Tilt/swivel screen
Live View with contrast detect AF
Movie Mode
Wider ISO range
11 point AF system with 3D tracking (D60: 3 point AF)
Control of Active D-Lighting intensity
Automatic correction of lateral chromatic aberration
Choice of JPEG quality in RAW+JPEG shooting
Extra retouching options
More scene modes
Faster continuous shooting
Exposure bracketing
They're the features that make it more than the D60, imo, not really worth it if you've got the D60
