Me and a friend are planning heading out to australia next year for around 6 months, thinking from about october onwards.

Anyone been out to work in australia before? Just in the rough planning stages atm, seeing how much it would cost to get out there, etc etc.

Check STA travel for flight prices mate.

I was meant to be flying out in October this yr, flights were only £550 to Perth.

Due to work holiday entitlement i am now going on the 28th August. £800 flight

In January 2010 i will be going over on a 1yr Working Holiday Visa.

How much money are you saving for it? I hoping to have about £8k stashed away by the time I leave, includes selling the car, no point leaving it to rot for 6 months.

That'll be plenty i imagine mate. Im aiming for about 5/6k. I'm going to travel untill the money runs out, get some bar work/fruit picking whatever (all part of the experience I think) and then look for work in my trade (welding) which will hopefully will open a few windows just incase I want to move there permenantly. Thats just a rough plan though!

Prime time to do a bit of travelling around Asian first before hopping over. All my friends recomend it, plus its cheap while you are there.

I know, its so tempting. Ive got a over a year to try and persuade the head office, its a massive company, surley they have allowed someone a career break. Ill harrass them with letters etc, if its still a no then ill just have to resign!

Get onto HR first to see if it's possible, then approach your bosses if it is.

Well I phoned HR yesterday, and since im such a low level employee, they said I would have to resign. But im un-deterred, im going to write a few letter to them etc, might try the union too, see if I have any rights at all.

Yeah of course it's not for everyone. I know that when me and my mates went over there, it was simply the best time of my life and I seriously don't believe that I could top it in terms of adventure and also life lessons and discovering who you really are. It's easy to think you know who you are until you do something that changes the way you live your life.

My mate hated Australia. Said it was expensive and full of wankers.

I just dont fancy it, I like what I have. I dont really need to go to Aus to find out who I am

My sister's done the travelling thing, 2yrs in NZ - from what I gather she saw some pretty cool sights, but had to work like fuck to do it.

Id rather go a holiday, I'd like to think I could do/see 90% of what she did in her time there going on an all out 3 week holiday.

I had one that went and loved it and is now moved on to Japan and I know of a couple of others that lasted a month and hated it. I think it depends where you are in Oz etc...

Gold Coast, Sydney, and Melbourne I think.

I liked Sydney, but I was about 14 when I went.

Not too sure where they all were, think the one that loved it was on the coast but he had his brother there as well. The guy I met in the pub that hated it said it was shockingly expensive and the women weren't that great either think he was in Melbourne.
