Anyone know how I can check if a property has, or has had, an active telephone line in the past?
SKY wont install HD in my new place without an active telephone line and I can't remember seeing a telephone point. I can't just pop round to check before I move in as it's 250 miles away.
Don't BT charge something ridiculous like £125 to install a new line? Hope SKY won't be as much.

Yes BT does, and you can pay sky £30 for not having a line.
Call BT and ask if there is an active or has ever been an active line, they can check straight away.
IIRC you can even do it online at BT's website.

I would be happy to pay the £30 to SKY to install the TV without a line installed. They guy on the phone just said they can't do that though?
Will check BTs website now.

Just spoken with BT and they said the last line installed was in 2004 so it has been ceased.
Hope SKY don't bum me dry for a new install.

Just paid for Sky to activate the line in my flat.
Sky TV + install + Box + line activation was £69.
Beats BT wanting £125 just to turn the line on

I have paid £30 for the HD installation already. The problem is I don't think this will be a simple activation as I can't recall seeing a line or BT box at all. I think I might need the telephone line fed in from the street etc...
I best get lubed up.

You need a phoneline in the house for them to install the HD box.
Phone BT first to check, if there's been a line and it's not ceased it should be free.
If there's no/ceased line phone sky and see if they'll do it cheap.

On the phone to SKY now as BT say the line has been ceased.
Been on hold for ages!
Hope they can sort me a telephone install date soon as I have booked the HD to be installed the day after I move in.

Afaik people on here have paid about 30/40 quid.
If that doesn't work have a look on moneysavingexpert.com, they had a way around it but not sure if it still works.

Not really free is it:
"In order to qualify for free line installation, you'll have to sign up for an 18 month contract with BT. This is more than the usual minimum 12 months, but the cost of that extra 6 months may be well worth it when you factor in the £122.50 you'll be saving.
You'll also have to make at least 10 calls a month using your new line to qualify for the free installation, but these can be calls that are inclusive to your BT package.
When you sign up with BT in order to get this offer, you'll automatically be put on to BT's most basic plan, which is the Unlimited Weekend Plan. This involves a cost of £14 a month for line rental, and allows you to make unlimited weekend calls to UK landlines without incurring any extra fees. You may upgrade to a different plan if you wish."
So you have to sign up to an 18 month contract at £14 a month and have to make sure you make X amount of calls etc.
With SKY I get free line rental so even if I had to pay SKY £122.50 for the install (which I hope I don't) its still cheaper.
Plus BT customer service is a joke.

I have just been told this over the phone by the home move department. I have made him put full notes on the account as I'm sure the next person I speak to will tell me something different.

Manual Enablement Fee of £25 without a telephone line.
You don't have to pay it if you have a line installed within 6 weeks of your TV being installed. Looks like I have to pay £105 phone line install as it's BT Openreach who install the line not SKY so they can't offer me a a reduced price.

Thats odd as SKY quote £105 for the line to be installed. By your calculations they charge £120?
