anyone done a degree with them, or even hired someone with one?

I'm having a dilema in my head regarding how they are perceived by potential employers!

I'm wanting to do another degree via distance learning ( BEng(hons) (specialising in mechanical engineering) but just cant muster up the balls to potentially throw cash down the drain

Nowhere else seems to do a full degree (not a masters) via distance learning!

Can you do a specialised engineering degree through OU?

Is it not just a general engineering degree?

its a general BEng, but you can tailor it suit your needs. Its the masters down the line i'd be more intersted in being specialised.

Masters in SubSea Engineering for example

I'm not sure how they are looked upon but the fact you are taking time to study while working must count for quite a lot, and it is a bona fide degree so I think they will probably be quite good.

I think the degree will be looked at the same as any other degree. The employer won't necessarily see where you studied so shouldn't matter much. A bigger question is whether you'll be able to stick at studying at home! Alot of people start with good intentions but give up shortly after!

You'd put where you got the degree from on your CV, so yes.... they will see it.

How many modules do you think wou can take at once

Also it says on your certificate where you qualified.
So they might even ask for proof.

i did a two year diploma from bristol to reading - about 80 mile trip.

my advice is- dont do it, unless you get a day off for studying... it made me severly stressed and unhappy having to get into work at 7 in the morning, and study 2 hours, then finish at 6 to study until 10...

6 hours a day studying is a bit ott. If you need that much you shouldn't be doing it.

There's nothing wrong with the OU, because of its student numbers it's classed as one of the world's largest universities!

Lenny Henry also got a BA(Hons) in English from there, so it must be good!

OU seem to be one of the few places that offer distance learning engineering courses.

It would possibly be worth contacting a 'proper' uni and asking would they accept you for an MEng year after getting the BEng from the OU?

Couple guys on my platform have done them, company paid for it & they done the work in company time. Think i'd do it if I got given the chance.

I recall one guy on my shift saying he had to attend lectures when he was home....so maybe not OU for him!? Probably worth contacting, tell them you've already got one degree and that your off enough time to cope with the work load!!

Subsea engineering is what I'd fancy moving onto if I ever move on so to speak.

Adam, you ever been to Montrose for work/course? Im just back this afternoon, wheit a place....

Depending on the course you still have to attend a number of lectures / tutorials etc throughout the course

The engineering ones you have to do 2 week residential courses, that's it though.

I did some firefighting stuff down at the RGIT place in montrose.... cant really comment much on it. Wasnt in a fit state :S

Simon - I must 'take' 2 modules that require attending a physical class.

Most uni partime courses are class based, and not suitable.

MEng at proper Uni's will be accessable with an BEng(Hons) Open.

There are a few uni's that have final year BEng courses via distance learning. These really need foundation degree's or relevent experience in the subject for you to just take the last year

I've applied for that at Bradford Uni - but not holding my breath that they'd take me on with my previous degree and no mech engineering experience.

one thing thats always struck me as 'different' with OU is that anyone can attempt a degree! I suppose thats good in a way, as a lot of folk will have horsed around in school and ballsed things up.

But then I suppose most OU students are 'older' so may get over looked for younger graduates when it comes to those jobs.

Hopefully my current experience would count for something if i decide to change jobs down the line.

My mum is a tutor for OU and I believe that most of her students are 40+ but then that is Latin
