Pick up a 1.8 Astra CD tomorrow and want to fit a cd player to it asap. The car has steering controls and I was wandering what aftermarket headunits go with the steering wheel controls, Or is it just a case of getting a lead to make any headunit work.
Need to know, as I have no music on 8 track anymore

My mate's JVC works with the steering wheel controls, I think you can get adapters for other brands too.

My Pioneer is pretty good, does what I want it to and sounds good with the Pioneer speakers. Sells for about £60. I think the model is MEP-2000 or something like that

I have a panesonic in my astra, and just used one of the "autolead" leads to have the steering controls working. Cost me £25 for the lead iirc.

£25 for a lead
Where was that from?

Thats about the standard Autoleads price, You need a lead for the car than a lead for the radio, So you need a Stalk control lead for the astra then the patch lead for the unit depending what you have, The patch leads are £5. Just make sure the headunit has stalk function otherwise its a waste of time.

PS, try ebay for the leads. I have the Autoleads manual at work so can get the part numbers. Just depends on the year for the astra

Its a 2000 on a W reg. So i need a lead for the car, then one for the headunit.

Im pretty sure some headunits come with the output on the back for stalk controls and some don't, my old alpine didn't have one but my new one does.
And the leads cost me around £30, one which was vehicle specific and the other which was stereo brand specific

Yea thats right mate,
PC99-X06 For the car from autoleads...
http://www.dynamicsounds.co.uk/steering-wheel-interfaces-vauxhall-c-47_87_250.html
Then the correct patch lead... PC99-ALP (alpine) PC99-SON (sony) etc

If they come with the stalk function on the unit they will have a Jack socket on the back of some wires, You then buy the patch lead to connect to the jack socket or the wires then to the stalk controll box

Yup, Autoleads PC99-X06 (pre canbus, which is everything up to 03 i believe) and then leads to the head unit (PC99-KEN, PC99-PIO, PC99-ALP etc). Managed to get mine from ebay for around £15 which wasn't too bad and then another 4 quid for the lead to the headunit, although i'm currently struggling with the pioneer lead i got from the bay (it's basically a sony lead, which apparently works with pioneers but i'm missing the CD/Radio search function).
Connect2 do steering control leads which i've been told are a lot lot better than the autoleads offering (found out after purchasing mine lol)
You also need a facia (either double or single din), Autoleads do these again not very expensive (£10-20). And just make sure you switch the live (RED) and ignition (yellow) cables over (you shouldn't need a ISO harness as vauxhalls have standard ISO sockets on their radios).

That plugs into the car and into this...
Then this plugs into the radio above and into the black box in the first pic (black box in below pic shouldnt be there, thats from a rover stalk controll kit and is for show)

He doesnt need a Facia, Its a MK4 if its a W reg. Also the wires will be swapped over in the PC99-X06 so thats sorted.
Connects2 used to be the underdog but now are better than Autoleads. I just cant be arsed to look up the part numbers, its easier at work.
Yea they dont do a Pioneer lead mate, Silly i know

Yup, for the steering controls the PC99-X06 (is the vauxhall one) -
And then a lead (example for pioneer) -
>HERE< is a good list of the leads needed to plug into the PC99-X06

on my PC99-X06 the leads weren't swapped, hence needing to do it on the headunits loom (uses bullet connectors so it wasn't a problem).
They still do a pioneer lead (PC99-PIO), it's just that halfords don't stock it (apparently they say its been discontinued when actually you can still happily buy it - i just got one from ebay, which is a sony lead that apparently works with pioneers but like i say it does have the search/seek function for skipping through CD tracks etc)

Sound, Will sort one out. Wont need the fascia adaptor as its a single din
Just got a couple of ebay bargains
A full set of brand new genuine mats, and the full owners manual folder etc for under £20.
The car has service history but no books.
Just need a black centre console and gear knob to get rid of the horrable wood effect stuff.
Was only supposed to be a runaround, and now im spending money on it

Strange, The PC99 should swap the lives, If not, and good radio will have the bullets on the loom to swap anyway,
cars allways end up like that, cheap runabout turns into a money pit haha
