Need some help really badly with my 1997 polo 1.4.

Bough it a few weeks ago knowing that it had a starting problem , although was told it was a starter it needed.

Anyway put a starter in it yesterday and its still the same.
Put the key in and turn it , ignition lights come on but NOTHING happens after that.

Went to the scrappy and he thinks it could be an ignition barrell or the alternator? Dont see how the alternator could effect it though?

Car has just recently had a new battery btw.

Any help would be appreciatted ALOT , cheers

PS. the car bump starts ok
