I always thought the speed cameras got the BACK of your car, and you have a chance to slow down

I thought speed cameras had to get the rear of your car if you're on that side of the road, (blinding drivers etc).

Road works would also confirm this...
Probably a 50-60 limit in road works with average cameras?

Your standard one that you see all over the place at the side of the road tends to get you as you've driven past them, but Im sure they can be set up to do it the other way. It has nothing to do with blinding you as you drive towards it, as what about the innocent cars going the other way when someone is getting flashed?!
By the height of the pic, Id say that was some other sort of camera, probably an average given the roadworks are also there too.

Cosmo; Gatso camera (the normal ones) wil ltake a photo in both directions but you can not be prosecuted when driving towards.
the Truvelo camera however takes photos only from the front but with no flash to identify the driver

Interestingly, the police say our registration plates have to be the size they are, and the lettering they are so that speed cameras can capture plates.....
So why in America are the plates half the size, 3D, tiny thin letter, but their speed cameras, which are effectivly the same as ours, can pick up the reg plates fine.
This included in car cameras in police cars.....
Nanny state do what we tell you Britain again?
For my next trick, i'll impose £10k fine for hiring illegal immirgrants, then hire one myself, and not step down from my role...
Oh, wait....

I used to be part of a team that made ANPR camera's and the software behind the engines. The context checker and post processing for american plates is beyond non geek contemplation. Each state, each type of plate and whether the plate has stacked characters or not has to be taken into the equation.
It took developers where i worked 3 years to perfect Florida number plates.
As soon as you throw a incorrect dimension into the mix on a uk character the plate can be read wrong, sometimes causing mis reads and then wasting police time.
BTW i agree with ANPR for catching drivers without Tax or Insurance, but dont agree with speed cameras.

did you just get that through? thought it was only 14 working days you had to wait?
i was doing about 78 on the clocks (about 73mph) in a 50mph, no roadworks, on a motorway and there was a grey camera in front with lines on the road.
i just braked hard and hoped for the best. that was 3 weeks ago now...

If it was on one of those gantry things with the screens that come on to tell you what speed to do, then iirc the cameras are only turned on when the screens are.
That had best be what they do because last week the guy driving me and my mates to Alton Towers went over 80 past one Fortunately the screens were off...

The ones that tell you how fast you are going aren't 'speed cameras', don't get fines or anything from them. They put one up near me and we used to see how fast we could get on the screen
