Went to my local RSPCA shelter today, and found a Staffy that I want to bring home Hes 4 years old, and generally a very excitable little thing. He was a bit of a bugger on his lead on the short walk we went on, but generally behaved quite well, hes not too fond on other dogs though
Just wondering who has one on here? Having no experience before of training a dog (and only really looking at a couple of Google / Wiki sites) it appears they are quite easy to train and are good around kids - this is going to be a very important factor cos our sisters are 10 and 8 and therefore he needs to accept them!

My uncle has a staffy, he is very wel behaved, bit of a nutter when he is down the park, as he jumps up and hangs off the trees, very well around kids, my two younger twin sisters (9) have been round him and hasn't bothered him. But he isn't fond of my boxer or jack russell, at first they growl at each other then ignore each other until later, but that may be a dominate thing.

Well im waiting on the landlord to ok us to have one for a start, she said it would be fine when we moved in, but that they would like an extra bit of deposit just to cover skirting boards and carpets
So yea waiting on that before anything else. I didnt want to get too far into it, otherwise I will want to go and fetch him today, I hate being someone who acts on impulse! Im going to email the kennels asking the process now from enquiring to getting him.
edit - my missus has wanted a dog for ages, so im planning on it being a surprise for her, to go with her engagement ring she got on holiday Before anyone says anything, yes he would be an early (and her only) Xmas present, but he wont just be for Christmas, that just wouldnt be fair on him

Get a greyhound, they make much nicer pets and landlords are more likely to let you keep one as a pet as opposed to a Staffie!

Too big fella! The missus was interested in a jack russel or westie but they are too yappy for my liking, this one barks but its sort of muted, which suits better!

Im looking to get one in the next couple of months aswell mate. 2 of my mates have them, which convinced me to get one when i decided i wanted to get a dog.
Awesome dogs, very friendly with humans. But like you said, dont really like other dogs. Need to keep the on a lead while out on a walk at all times really.

Definetly, ive seen on the internet what theyre more violent cousins can do Very powerful animals if handled incorrectly, its a shame that some chavs have chosen to use them as weapons as we see in the papers

My dads cocker spaniel has just had 8 puppies so he's trying to pursuade me to take one of them off him in a few weeks. Very, very, very tempted as they have such a nice temperament.
Would also encourage me to actually do some excercise

They don't have much body fat on them, so you could fold them up to put them in small spaces?
We have a couple of female greyhounds, they are much smaller than the males and don't bark at anything (unless you trap their tails in the patio doors by mistake )

How much do your dogs cost roughly? Like vets bills and food and stuff.
My dad reckons he cocker gets through about £15 of dry food a month and thats about it. Maybe another £100-150 in vets bills per year but not really any other costs. Sounds a bit cheap tbh.

Im wondering this as well actually, obviously I will have pet insurance for massive vet bills, but food and yearly check ups I know nothing about?

Does all depend on the size of the dog obviously, but better to go into these things with a rough idea

Here's what we spend on them roughly (prices are per greyhound):
£17.50/month - pet insurance
£15.00/month - dry dog food and treats
£150.00/year - vet bills
So on the above figures, each dog costs roughly £45.00/month to keep. So pretty much the same as what your dad has told you.
Bear in mind that pet insurance normally has an excess of about £70.00 in case your dog needs to have some expensive treatment/surgery etc.

So he wasn't lying then
Insurance is expensive though innit, not sure whether I'd get that or not. One of those things you'll never need if you have it, and dread something happening if you don't!

Depends how arsed you are if your pet gets run over or has some kind of disease!

How gutted would you be if it got some disease and you had to have it put down just because you tried to save £15 a month
Might have a think on it actually

Dry dog food is much cheaper than buying tinned dog food BTW - 15kg bag of Wagg dry dog food is about £9 from Asda.

PMSL
Thing is you will get attached to your pet, they become a part of the 'family' so to speak.
Vet bills and pet insurance prices FTL though
I think I should become a vet, I'd make more money doing that than designing people's websites

Dog food - when it comes on offer could just buy several bags and stock up at a good price, never really taken notice of the sort of offers they do on it though! £17.50 a month for dog insurance, jeez thats not far off the car insurance, and its actually more than my motorbike insurance I guess it depends on the dog though?

You know it. Think I've been pursuaded it'd be stupid not to have it already. Living, healthy dog or £400, know which I'd rather have

Yeah, you can get some quotes online for pet insurance but it ain't cheap overall!
I know a girl that owns a cat, she says she pays about £10 a month pet insurance for it!

Quick thing on Tesco shows £7.20 a month for a Staffy. Money Supermarket has different options from £125 - £225 a year, so its not that bad I guess
