Today when I was driving home I noticed my Temp guage increasing past its norm, which was strange as I was not in traffic
When it got to the 100 mark I pulled over and switched off the engine. Opened the bonnet and couldn't see any water in the expansion tank, opened the cap very slowly (there was lots of pressure) and all the water drained back into the tank to the level, then some drained back into the engine, but was still near the level
I topped it up and drove home with no problems but I noticed some white smoke out of the exhaust, but it could have been normal as it was cold
Any ideas? I straight away thought head gasket, but the water is clean (no oil) and there is no mayo in the oil filler cap

What engine is it?
Do you have any gushing water sounds coming from the centre console.

cheers for the reply(s)
car is a 1.4 16v sport with standard induction / zorst
I am guessing it is an air lock, will check the pipes for leaks aswell
Whats the best way to get rid of an Air Lock?

MY CAR DOES THIS EXACT SAME THING it does not overheat but the gauge does climb to 96-97 when in a jam but my expansion tank empty's and then lots of pressure is there and the tank fills back up to the max line when the lid is taken off, its really strange it has done it for months probably almost a year there is no oil in the water or gunge in the oil or white smoke so strange ent it its hard to check water coz of this, and i doe get a small sound of gushing water behind the centre conole but not masses of it

Dont worry this is quite normal. My old corsa 1.2 used to do this, within 10 secs of hitting traffic temp gauge will rise, hit the red, fan will come on and it cools down again. Your expansion tank will be empty as maximum amount of water will be in the rad and engine parts.

Mine did this, then a week later it wasn't running properly at all.
Got a nice large bill for radiator and headgasket.
I wouldn't say its normal.

odd, mine did run okay like it for a week or so, then it sounded like it was running on three cylinders.
Maybe it was just a coincedence that i noticed it just b4 head gasket blowing.

Car is now not idling correctly, seems down on power, slightly hesitant
NO mayo in the filler cap, and the water is clean, so I dont think its the head gasket
Still got lots of pressure in cooling system, but level sits at norm when engine is cold, very low when hot
Any ideas would be great, shall I stop driving the car to be safe?
Oh and cant hear any gushing water sounds so far, and temp guage is sitting at 92 - 95 which is normal!
