how would i go about installing windows 7 on my computer? or should i just leave it until planty can come and sort it out

Stick it in, reboot and press next a few times.
Depends whether you are upgrading or formatting first.
Formatting first just make sure you've got everything backed up.

well everything is on a external hdd apart from the odd thing that i dont mind loosing but upgrading from vista to 7 will stick it in and give it a go

Download the drivers you need for your motherboard to work just encase you cannot connect to the Internet on win7, store them on a usb stick if you don't have the motherboard disc, just to safe.

all sorted and everythings working, just did the upgrade thing and took 2 and half hours to do but its all working now.
really weird though, and quite slow atm for me.

it might be slower if you upgraded, hence why most people do a clean install on a formatted drive.

Yep im going to have to format it when ian gets chance to come round/ i have all the disks etc sorted out.
im constantly using 1.3gb of ram since the upgrade so will format it and start again when i have someone here who knows what they are doing.
edit: after installing some updates and restarting its dropped to below 900mb of ram never bin that low!!
