Why exactly are they on strike?
Im prob wrong, but are they on strike because they aint being payed enough?
Aint really read much about it recently.

It's not because they don't get paid enough, it's to do with the way Royal Mail are dealing with modernising the business.
They're restricting hours, lowering overtime, trying to make people redundant, and generally going against the agreements that were in place with the union.

First of all, I'm not in the union, and don't agree with the strike, but this is what I believe to be reasons.
Basically at the moment we are instructed due to health and safety that our actual walking shouldn't be more than 3.5 hours, they claim that every postman in the country finishes earlier than that, and therefore they can get rid of one person, and make others cover that walk.
From what i've seen it's 50/50 as to whether that's true or not, the younger and generally fitter people can finish 15-20 mins early, the older folk finish 10-15 mins late, but everyone is still being forced to do more walking on top of that, so some of them are working 4-4.5 hours, which isn't really on.
I personally normally finish a bit early (15-30 mins) but that's because I get round quick because I know that when i'm done I can go home and get a nap after being in work from 5:45.
If I wanted I could walk at a normal speed and it would take me to my time.

and i work 10 hous shift ( often 11 and some times 12)... its order picking = walking round warehouse...pretty much non stop... and i have to pull a pallet truck behind me... and i am sure i walk many more miles than a postman does on an average day....

Derby is on strike tomorrow, basically tomorrow is meant to be processing on strike, friday is delivery, and I dunno about Saturday...
But in Derby it's all done in one office so we're all off on the same day.
I'll probably be going in anyway as I need the cash, and it'll be 8 hours overtime for me
And I had a pedometer on my old phone, I was doing between 8 and 14 miles a day depending on which walk I did and whether I did overtime or not. Not saying that you don't do more order picking, i've done that too, but it's not a small amount of walking. Personally I love it, it's good pay, fresh air, I get to listen to the radio all day, keep relatively fit and finish at 2 at the latest each day

I feel the same way for the posties as I did for the firemen.
More power to anyone with union backing that are having the piss taken out of them.
People don't go on strike at the drop of a hat or on a whim. They do it because their hand has been forced by the arseholes at the top.
Good luck to them I say.
In the grand scheme of things, a few days slow mail delivery doesn't ammount to much when it means that (even a small minority) of working men and women can make a stand for a change.

If you don't like the plans, theres plenty of people these days willing to do your job. Think its awful that a union can hold a company to ransom. All that will happen is Royal Mail will go to the wall and they'll all be out of a job.
Made me laugh the threat of legal action if Royal Mail took on temporary workers during the strike, rediculous threat to make

It is actually against the law to bring in temporary workers to do the job of someone that is on strike.

Excuse me for being a capitalist scab but if you can finish 30 minutes early every day, is it not right that you should be paid less or asked to work harder?
If I could get through a lesson in 30 less minutes than were on the timetable, I would either expect to be paid less or given other duties in the 30 minutes.
If I was paying a builder to put up a wall and he charged 5 days labour and it took 4, I would ask for my days labour back.
Not sure if I'm clear here but you admit yourself that a great many people are going for a quick sleep on company time?

on the news the postal workers where trying to stop the temp/agency people! half of them just said they dont care and are happy to have job for a bit!

Ian, I never argued that I shouldn't finish early, but they pay for the masses, not for the quicker, healthier people. And there are days when I finish 30 minutes over my time, and don't get paid extra, so it does average out a slight bit.
i likened it to the expenses scandel in the other thread, basically if you can get away with it, and it's the done thing, then that's what is being done. If you could get away with getting paid an hours wage for half an hours work then you would.
I'll probably be going in, and I did say I don't particularly agree with the strike, as far as i'm concerned i'm getting paid very well for the work I do.
But I'm not fully informed on the entire situation so i'm only commenting from my point of view.
Walking around in -5 degrees over winter, in snow and ice isn't exactly fun, but I get paid well, so I do it. I've got a job, i'm personally very happy for that.
I agree with certain elements of the strike, but not enough to potentially jeopardise the future of the business and lose work from big companies, who at the end of the day pay for my job.

There seems to be a strike every damn xmas.
Also 3.5hrs walking is feck all, ive done jobs working on factory floors on my feet for 12hrs a day, just now im doing 84 hours a week on my feet most the day & winter conditions 150 miles out at sea are not pleasent.
