i think i have a virus on my work laptop. i just opened up IE and i have some new toolbar called "Star". i can't turn it off and i don't know where it is to uninstall it. also my searches are affected. no matter which search engine i use i never get taken to the page i am supposed to. i've done a virus scan and there is nothing wrong. also i ran ad-aware and spybot and they have found nothing. i tried to do a system restore but it wouldn't complete.
any ideas?

Install and run malware bytes anti malware, that's been doing the business recently.

i can't even get that link to work. it looks like it's about to load but then it stops and IE says it can't load the page.

Try starting in safe mode with networking, not sure if this will load the wireless drivers or not though, that might stop enough loading to get IE to work.

The problem on my mums was basically the harddrive was fooked. Had to get a new one and when installing the operating system on, had to disable "Native Sata Mode" in the BIOS even tho its a new sata drive, if its enabled it doesnt find any harddrives to install to..

i don't think it's the same thing mate. mine has only been playing up since this "star toolbar" appeared. it's got to be malware.

Did you update it before it ran?
It won't definitely get rid of everything but I've had to use it a couple of times recently and it's done better than anything else.

Malware bytes has improved loads. I discounted it off hand for a lads laptop in work the other week and in the end was the only thing that seemed to shift his fake AV spyware program.
