Nice little suprise in the post today
Ordered some Mountain bike lights back in August from Australia. Came to £180 for the two sets (mine and my mates) including shipping and australian taxes.
3 Months later I have a letter from TNT stating I owe them £83 for import taxes
If it was only £20 fair enough but that seems a hell of a percentage.
Anyway to avoid paying or will that just end me in jail

Check the following with TNT:
- the declared value and shipping costs are correct on the customs paperwork
- they cleared the consignment using the correct customs codes
I used to work at DHL years ago and they often fucked up by clearing things using the wrong codes, causing the consignee to pay more duty and VAT than they were supposed to - I also worked at a few other courier/carrier companies over the years to know they all don't give a shit about doing their jobs properly.

PS - PMSL @ receiving the letter 3 months later! You are supposed to get notice of charges soon after you receive the goods!

Yeah don't worry about it until you start getting demand letter and then debt collection agencies and threats of court action!

Ok but if he doesn't get any demands or whatever then he could of just not paid. I haven't said ignore it for ever, and if you get demands ignore them too. If it does then pay it! Good try on trying to be a clever dick
It's TNT's fault it has taken them 3 months to follow it up and going on that I don't think they will be arsed about £83 if it comes in one way or another

It's not TNT who are chasing you for the money, they only want a handling fee (which is also a joke) it's customs who want the money, they will chase you.

TNT will have already paid the customs charges to clear the shipment hence why they are wanting the money.

Of course he's going to get demands if he doesn't pay, companies don't just forget about debt you know!
And yes they will be arsed about £83, I've heard of cases of TNT sueing for much less than that!

Bugger
This page has been added to the site since I bought them
http://www.ayup-lights.co.uk/admin-fee-duty-explanation/
Either way by that I should be paying £15 + 2.7%

My mate bought a set of those lights about a month ago. He got the V4 adventure kit so has the helmet mount ones as well as the handle bar mount ones.
He paid £287.50 like it says on the site and not had a bill from customs... YET. They are quality lights though

Nope was in October, maybe end of September when he ordered. He will get a big customs bill cos he bought a set for his Dad too, so nearly £600 worth of lights. Tax will be massive on that

yer our bill for the two sets is 15% uk vat + 2.7% import tax + £15 TNT handling
Tempted to tell them to go fish
Also realised that our letter is a final notice so fuck knows where all the ones before have gone
Explains the 3 month silence

Yeah the carrier's 'handling' fees for clearing goods through customs are ridiculous, Parcelforce IIRC charge about £10-ish as well.
As you may or may not know you have to pay any duty and VAT if the item is over £18 in value (new) or £36 if a gift. So if the value is say £19 they'd still charge the same bloody admin fee!
