Ive got a 94 GSI pre ecotec and was wondering what there like for oil, cos mine has got a problem its not smoking, leaking or nothing, yet its drinking it like petrol, I was wondering if it was down to a heavy right foot. I was using full syn 5/40 at 40 quid a time but soon stoped when the problem didnt go. any suggestion appreciated
Also id be lucky if it last 1000 miles just had full service, belts cam kit bearing tensioner. also there a slight taping from the engine if that helps thanks

ha ha welcome to the world of GSi problems
mine had the same, just been sorted, its ur oil valve stem sills mate, mine were stuck in the valves so much they were open all the time! kained the oil
mine dident smoke or leak either
and the tapping (which i had too) is where the oil is not reaching (and therefore not lubricating) the hydrolic lifters
get ur oil sills replaced but it is expensive unless u get it done at trade like moi as uve got 16 sills (1 for each valve) and their about £14 a sill i think, then labour

I'm having the same problem.I changed my oil about a month ago.Refilled it to the max line on the dip stick and at the weekend i checked the level and it was 1.5 litres down. No sign of any leaks.

have/did u notice any performance losses as my car seems to have 2 quite big flat spots only really notice them in 2nd. is this due to stem sills keeping the valve or whatever open.

has any body ever had any chew with air filters i have a green cotton air filter and put it on my GSI L Reg and i took to to a rolling road. I was told that the air filter actually decreases the power if so why can this be. also my car is drinking the oil but i am getting blue smoke out of my exhaast and experiencing flat spots is this due to the same problem do u wreckon. Any help appreciated thanx

Flat spots here too. Low revs, but its ok when it gets going.
Had my car serviced about Sept. Last year, and checked Oil the other day, it was just on the Min. Done about 1000 miles since service. Does that sound about right ?

dixon - do u mean induction kit or filter that goes into the OE air box?
if so induction kits are detremental to corsas becasue they get rid of the only think that stips them sucking in hot air from the engine which is the air box

I've been told i will need a top end rebuild and possibly pistons to sort out mine.It uses about 1 litre every 500 miles.
The only good thing about this is that at the same time i have this work done (when i have saved up some pennies)
I can get the head ported,3 stage valve seat cut and deep pockets machined into the top of my new pistons so i can then use a very high lift long duration set of cams. This dream can come true if i can find about 2 grand.

Yeah I know my engine is smaller but I still cant see how a car using over 1.5 Litres of oil in 1000 miles is normal! There gotta be something wrong somewhere!

yeh, I had an induction kit and my gsi and it ran crap, so I took it off again, now just running with drilled airbox.
So it sounds like oil is leaking thru the stem seals then?
Which could be why I run a bit smokey (white smoke) ?

White smoke is water, blue is oil.Could be your headgasket on its way out mate.

if its a common problem on gsi's then its a design fault i wouldnt imagin that when u buy and brand new gsi (when u could) drive it out a showroom and it runs out of oil by the time the next service is due the engine would have seized. if it is the stem seals then its gonna cost me alot anyway so would it be worth forking out for a top end rebuild.

get the stem stills done, also check the guides while ur at it, i had to replace mine cos 7 were cracked
i was thinking about just getting another gsi engine, but then whats the point u dont know whats wrong with it and it could have the same problems
at least if u repair ur engine u know its a good solid engine
