I'm testing the market for a new motor, at the minute I quite fancy the 330Ci (pre facelift) but for that price I could get a pretty good M3 Evo too.
Anyone?

Two very different cars.
Personally a 330ci would be my choice

I'll be honest, I'm more swayed by the 330Ci, but its just the extra grunt with the M3 that makes me want one, btu it would mean going for a slightly older car than I would have prefered.

I love e36's now, never used to like them, but there are some really nice examples and I did want one myself, but it depends really, despite liking the e36's, I voted e46 - newer, "more reliable" and all that crap. But then the e36 m3 is a very good car.

E36 is showing its age now yet just isnt cool enough to have the draw of the E30.
I would rather have as new as possible is its to be your daily car.

Id have the 330Ci Purely because of reliabilty. Theyre not slow, just not as fast as the M3. As said the E36's are ageing and as theyre fairly cheap now, alot of them have been or do get alot of abuse and neglect imo.

E36 suffers from scuttle shake which the E46 doesnt, so its certainly a |"better" made car (330)
However, it lacks a proper engine and diff
M3 FTW (If you can afford the extra on servicing and potentionally changing Vanos etc)

330d with a re-map would probably be quicker then E36 M3. Esp around town etc.

quicker maybe, but it wont have a proper diff or suspension/steering. More to an Mcar than power figures...
