tbh you'll be wanting a beginner one as to look after one properly its a fair amount of work - and buying one already well grown can cost a fortune.
Although personally Id go all out and buy a Japanese red maple bonsai, fully grown.

I'd buy a fully grown one too. Growing your own will take forever and probably die tbh.
When I was little my dad started to grow 8 trees, and named each one after me, my sister and all our cousins at the time.
One by one they all died. I remember being chuffed that the one named after me was the last one still alive, until that died as well

Had a go a growing some trees from cuttings, they got to about a foot high, we had a board in the soil to try to get the roots shallow. My Dad gave up with them in the end so they never got potted.

I had one for a couple of years. Used to give it water from the water cooler, which it loved. Then got it home and it had tap water. It didn't last much longer...
They are cool though, you get quite attached to them.

Bloke at my work is into Bonzai, he knows all there is to know about them. Goes to Japan and is quite famous in the Bonzai world.
They take shit loads of looking after, and like already stated buying a ready grown one can be expensive.
They are cool though
