Don't know if anyone read a post of mine in Off Day about the Vulcans?

Well, Heritage are leasing a factory unit that my company own, next door to where I work. They are using it for the Vulcan division and are storing all the vulcan parts in there.

I popped in to fix the heating today and the guy said he'd show me round so I agreed.

They have 4 brand new Olympus engines in there, and spares engine. The spares engine they have is now scrap, which is a shame - A piece of tar the size of a 5p piece went into the engine and totalled it. Apparently, even a sparrow flying into the engine would mean catastrophic failure on these units. Rolls Royce scrapped the engine moulds years ago, so once the engines are gone, they really are gone.....forever, never to be repaired etc.

It's so honourable how they are keeping the plane in the air, it costs £2.5m to keep it flying, each of the olympus engines - the last in existence ( ) cost something like £2m each!!

They had undercarriage parts, radars, cockpits and all the essentials, including the jet engine that starts the main engines of the Vulcan - they are going to run the starter jet up in the carpark soon and run it to full boost, they ran it the other day on tickover and trust me, it would have woke ALL the neighbours!!

Anyway, I just think its such a great project, look out for the Vulcan at airshows around the country next year!

the camoflage was propper poor, i saw the whole thing.
On a serious note tho, I've seen it a few times as I work near a RAF base and it flys by a few times a year. Cool Stuff
I do enjoy the eurofighter more tho. That thing is funking loud when given it some.

When I worked for BAE systems at Woodford they used to get us to help this bunch of retired old duffers on XM603.

The thing was an absolute pile of corroding shit, I think they must have just needed something to do?

I can remember having to go into the intakes on my knees and spin the rotors with my hands, even though you know it's not going to start up it is still pretty daunting.

tbh, It is an awesome beast, but really, what is so special? It's just big.

Considering, only 20 years after the vulcan came the harrier, which is able to stop mid air, then fly left and right and even backwards, which is a much greater feat than being big.

Then we have the TSR2, far superior aircraft to the Vulcan, yet cut off before it had chance to prove its worth.

Please don't think I'm knocking the Vulcan, but they are still way down on the impressive list.

I would rather lose by a mile because i built my own car, than win by an inch because someone else built it for me.

unfortuatley ste, as we both know, it draws more people to airshows than anything else

the noise, and a plane that size beeing than manovable, wth 1940's technolgy is impressive

you cant bring the tsr2 into it either

taken from wiki

English Electric was later incorporated into the British Aircraft Corporation, later marks being developed and produced as the BAC Lightning.
