Saw some of them in the paper the other day, I also just learned the Queen is on canadian money.

Yes, Elizabeth II is the Queen of Canada among other states within the Commonwealth Realms. These include the UK, Austrailia, Jamaica, New Zealand, and a bunch others. The Queen is more a cultural icon so she doesn't really do much in the way of government and politics in the UK and probably next to nothing at all in Canada and other nations. I believe Canada traditionally mints their coins based on the ruling monarch at the time.
