Shouldn't use ladders in this weather, Jas, you might fall off it

Sounds like it. the cold won't be helping things either. £80 is a lot though are there any local motorfactors you can try?

Go to a motorfactor, should be able to find a battery cheaper than 80 notes!
Also its worth wacking a test meter on to make sure its not a duff alternator.

Mr2 you can just sit on the front and lower the battery in. I bought a new battery for mine and it died very quickly..turned out the alternator had ceased and the belt had snapped off.

If it was the alternator, your battery would die (because it has to power the entire car) quite quickly and need bumped to get going, and the battery would last for a shorter period. What is it doing when trying to start? Is it just clicking or can you hear it dying as it tries to turn over? If it's just clicking, it could be the starter motor.
Edit: OR, if you have some sounds in the car, it might be getting drained too much, in which case you'll need a power cap.

If you can still drive it for a while it shouldn't be the alternator, unless it is only slightly charging it for some reason.

My first XE managed to get from Falkirk to my house, to Leven and half way back before cutting out (which is 40+ miles). Then I'd only get 20 yards between bump starting That was because the alternator Earth Strap wasn't there... AND the belt pulley was loose.

Have a look at the alternator, is the Earth strap secured tightly?
