Is this something to worry about. I know the pink fleshy bit is very sensitive, and he keeps licking it like he's trying to get it off, and if we touch it to try and pull it off for him he's very protective of it. We were at the vets literally a week ago for his vaccinations, and we asked about this particular claw because it was very long and they said not to worry, and now he's caught it somewhere

Is there anything we can do or just leave him to it, when hes walking it doesnt bother him because it doesnt touch the floor which is a good thing....

Id get it looked at by the vet, they'll no doubt remove the broken bit and dress it so it doesnt get infected. If it did get infected it could go very bad.

Is this likely to be something covered by insurance, no chance can afford £300 after christmas and MOT....been reading around on Google and its 50/50 on vets, many saying if its bleeding its a vet trip but if not allow nature to take its course and if he starts messing with it think about the vets

I would see how it goes, its pretty common thing to happen, never taken any of our dogs to the vets when they have done it.

The bit that has bent back was covering the smaller 'claw', the bit that is exposed is called the check / chuck / chick? The word escapes me....

my dog cut his paws open on something when he was over the fields.

he just kept licking them and eventually they healed up.

they were very bad aswell, the skin had split apart on the paw. not nice.

Thats the word Claire, cheers

Well overnight / on his walk this morning the claw has come off. He walked normally though, was still pulling on the lead and didnt shy away from long grass or concrete, and hes now laying on the living room floor licking it. It does look a bit sore but he isnt wimpering or limping so I dont think its that bad, will keep an eye on it for any infection though. Its alright people saying 'you need to bathe it' but he wont let us near it so the only way it would do that is to either let him go at it with his tongue or anaesthetic at the vets, hes too strong and wriggly for us to hold him down without physically hurting him

Clean it in hibi-scrub (local pharmacy should do it) about £1.50 and wait a few days as it may very well grow out.

But it theres still distress from the dog etc then a trip to vets maybe in order to prevent any infection and so on.

Though it's up to you. Insurance should cover it I can't see why not.

Fair play, Ive just had a look at it now, the nail is growing over it again really quickly (quick is nearly covered again) and he isnt paying too much attention to it anymore, looks like he licked himself better

Dont dogs have some sort of healing in their spit or something? Hence why they lick human cuts and whatever?

Or am I just imaging that one?

Be alright that, if its not bothering him too much id leave it.

Our dog took the skin of all her pads on her paws by skidding on gravel and that looked horrific, put a bit of antiseptic cream on them and bandaged them up and they were as good as new within a few days.
